I'm building a whole chapter and need to know how many marines in a whole chapter? I'm talking everyone. Tanks, dreads, bikes, everyone. Maybe if I feel froggy I'll build a matchinf fleet. Oh, and don't say 1000, that is wrong true me.
well if your chapter is a strict follower of the codex astartes, then the chapter would have 1000 space marines. but if your chapter differs from the codex astartes than you could any number of marines. the salamanders have between 700 and 800 while some chapters have more than the regular 1000. so which chapter are you using?
But this is what I'm talking about when I said it's not 1000. If you look at the codex it shows more, like masters, senior officers, company captains and others. It can't be just 1000. I think I'm going to try GW. I would love to know. I guess if it's my own chapter I could make it as big as I want.
One more think who drives the tanks? Marines?
Each chapter has (ideally) 1000 'field' marines, IE tactical/assault squads, including chaplains and librarians, etc. In addition, it has enough extra marines to crew all it's vehicles. So an undamaged chapter would have over 1000 marines, though you would have to find out just how many vehicles are in a chapter.
A chapter has a fighting force of 1000 marines (tactical, assault, and dev squads), not including officers (captains, chaplain, etc etc.). This is rare as the scout company is rarely full as the chapter is constantly recruiting and losing marines. Also, the armory has the master of the forge and techmarines, which are not included in the 1000 marine count.
In chapters that don't have proximity to the admech or resources to send marines, the vehicles would indeed be operated by battle brothers.
Chapters have a 1000 battlebrothers, all the others such as captains, chaplains, libriarians, apothecaries and techmarines aren't accounted in this.
For instance a battlecompany has officially a 100 battlebrothers which it does, 6 tactical sqauds, 2 assault sqauds and 2 devastator sqauds, note how the command sqaud, chaplain and chaplain arent accounted for.
For the chapter this will mean there are likely between 100 and 300 extra marines in service as well.

I think Chapters do usually have more-or-less 1000 Marines, of any kind, at any one time.
If every Company were always at the full strength of 100 Marines, then yes, it would probably be nearer to 1200-1300 Marines.
But, if you look in the 3rd gen. SM Codex, and the page that outlined the current strength of the Ultramarines, only the 4th Company was at full strength. The others were nearer to 70-80 Marines per Company. So, I'd say the 2 balance each otehr out, resulting in Chapters being around 1000 Marines.
