Well, thought this would be a fun idea, each week I will post a thread with a topic, people can PM me with ideas for it, so feel free. Now onto the first topic:
In the New Codex for those who have it or even in the old codex, just make sure you mention which one you are refering to.
My recommendations for 4th Ed Codex:
Chaplain is best really, run in a 10 man Assault Squad for a good counter assault, Librarians are good in other ways such as their powers in certain spots can be great, take this as a basic Librarian, maybe in Termie Armour in a Terminator Squad with Ass Cannons. Captains in the 4th Ed Codex are kinda pointless, don't take these unless for fluff reasons. Special Characters in the 4th Ed codex are great choices if you are playing that chapter otherwise stick to Chaplains and Librarians.
My recommendations for the 5th Ed Codex (so far):
I recommend the special characters, these are awesome in the new codex, only one I don't personally like it Vulkan He-Stan, he seems overpowered and I won't be surprised if he will be banned in tournies, this guy is insane, I say ask your gaming buddies first before playing with him. I particularly like Pedro, as he enables Sternguard to score Other characters seem solid and well priced.
Chaplains in the new codex, seem as good a choice as in the old codex, run the same, or go with them in a Vanguard Squad for a lot more bite . Librarians with their new powers seem great, haven't had a good look at them yet though. While Chapter Masters are now in at a cheap price and can have Honour Guard squads attached, these are awesome and the Masters are much more viable now, recommended to those who are fluff fanatics or want a beast in CC. Captains on Bikes enable 5 man Bike squads to be troops, this would be good for White Scars as techniqually the White Scars Character is a Captain. Jump Packs Captains do NOT allow Assault Squads as troops. Captains can take command squads, these are as normal really.
So onto you guys! And ask me any other questions if you want.
Regardless of how ever many times Dante + Honor guard beat this squad to the ground, I still love fielding a Chapter Master + dual LC's with an 8man command squad, and attach a Reclusiarch for good measure. Admitted it doesn’t jump, but Apoc, Bearer and Champion make up for that small lack. It also works well for my play style, as my army list is generally shooty as I face a lot of CC opponents, so these lads in cover in front of the fire-line makes for a good counter-strike team, coupled with a 5man assault squad which will jump in for support, it's a sweet sight.
The other option I field is the standard libby in termie armour attached to a termie squad with ass-cannons sat on a flank and walking up the field. It gives opponents that extra target to worry about, which is all it's there for really.
Well i'm starting to get a passion for allying a Grey Knight Brother Captain, and giving him a Psychic Hood. For 81 points.
That's LD10 psychic hood, in terminator armour with some real butt kicking melee stats (S6, power weaponed, Init5 WS5 many attacks with a 2+/5+ save. And a BS5 Storm Bolter to boot, that your opponent will struggle shooting at range. Oh, and fearless.)
As a guardsman with no Psychic hood access, or a DA player where you get LD9 for a mere 120 points i had to shop around.
Well, although I recently started playing Blood Angels, and I am happy with Dante, I am an Ultramarines player at heart. I really like the new Marneus Calgar.
He is expensive compared to other masters and special characters, but he has some awesome rules.
I bought the UM Honor Guard a few years ago and although they were never economical in the game, I played them from time to time, especially in Apocalypse games. I will play them even more now, in regular games. They are pricey, but the models look too good!! I will move them up the field behind some vehicles and assault squads and give them a cover save. Or maybe I will put them in a drop pod...
I recently acquired the Emperor's Champion model, but I was not sure what I was going to do with him. Now I know. I will paint him as Honor Guard with a relic blade! It will be perfect!
Once a Marine, always a Marine.
I haven't played 5th edition yet, but for 4th ed. I really like the chaplain as an HQ choice. I play BT and for me i've never had much use for a captain. I find that with a Chappy and required emp. champ that my chappy survives longer than my EC. I can put him on a bike, in a jump pack or in term. armour and he can lead my squad of initiates/neophytes and kick some ass. If we could take a librarian I might say he would make a good hq choice, but as BT can't I stick with the chaplain.
Didn't think of the GK Brother Captains, that makes it a good annoyance in the enemies side. Good idea.
BT are sorta limited in choices but the Chaplains make up for it in the ability to control squads. Try running squads of 20 with the Chappy, Helbrehct and Emp Champ in them, so fun.
It may be abit early, but I'm anxious to see what people think of the new codex. I love the variety of items you can put on your chapter master and captain.

Nobody else has mentioned this, but this made my eyes pop out...
if you get a Captain and buy him his Command squad, you get the apothecary for free.... and if you read the new narthicium rules, as long as the apothecary is out of close combat, his whole squad gets Feel No Pain.
I'm going to use the White Scars character with a command squad in a Razorback. Giving the whole army outflank is going to be either a hit or miss situation.
The new Librarian powers are rather interesting. I also like the fact if you upgrade to an Epistolary, you can use two powers in a turn.
P.S. RE the brother captain / grand master - Yep, you're right, the Grand master is hideously expensive making a weigh up of Basically double points for:
1) 3 wounds instead of one
2) Force weapon (Wooooo!)
3) Better WS, BS and Init by one. (As you say. I remember otherwise but the codex is not in front of Me. It doesn't really matter as it's not why you're getting him - you still have many high strength attacks at decent Initiative if he ends up in melee.)
Drawbacks: InstaKillable T4.
Option B: Get him terminator retinues, for more attacks, no force weapon, but your BC is not pick-outable in melee. (If you're only doing two retinues you may have to take him as a elite, as command have 3)
but the brother captain at 81 points is just lovely. It's a very, very low sum, for either your IG army (with no psychic hood), Your DA army (120 points for a LD9 utter joke of a librarian! There's a typo of a extra 0 isn't there? You must be joking.)
p.s. In a squad with holocaust (buy for him, not the squad) you can utterly mess up orks. I had 7xPAGK and a GK BR-Capt with Holocaust, was charged by two ork trukk squads, and killed 17 of them. (Holocaust counts towards combat total). That's alot of dead orks, 11 dead before they even struck.
Hopefully, when GW updates their FAQ/Erratas for the DA/BA, they'll actually update the rules for several items so that they'll be standard across the board. Take a look at the new storm shield rules.... yummy...
