What is the best use of tac squads?
I like to arm them to their teeths and cram em' into a rhino and let them rain some havoc over the enemy.
but thats me how do you like to use your tac squads? and how many squads should one field(this ofcourse depends on army size)?
The beauty of Tactical squads as that their is no "best" use of them. Back in the day (4th ed.) a 10 man Lascannon/Plasma Gun config used to be popular. I've seen a few people break them down into mini-Devastator squads, with 5 marines, one with a lascannon or something.
A set-up I used a lot was 6 marines, HB, Flamer and a twin-HB Razorback, for max anti-infantry.
It's also worth nothing that most applications of tactical squads benefit from a Rhino. Never, ever, ever underestimate the power of Rhinos. They are an absolute godsend.
Yeah rhinos are vry good especially with the new ramming rule, means ur rhino can disemark its troops, hide for a bit then ram any armour that presents a threat to the tac squad then shoot the offending target lol.
With me tac squads im more tradiational i stick to one flamer and a missle launcher (general toruny) or if i know what im facing i put in a lascannon or plasma cannon depending on targets. They have also become realy important due to the troops only rule fo objectives, mind you for blood angels our assaults are classed as troops so our tac squads are lesser in number.
tactical squads were excellent units in 4th ed, buying them 2 plasmas or 2 meltas and a powerfist sarge and mount them in a rhino.
Now their role is going to change. Although being give the option for free missile launcher and dropping the cost of meltagun to 5 pts, they are being relegated to objective capturing and holding while the rest of the army maches forward to engage the enemy. Powerfists are 25 pts and that is not good for a unit that moves 6 inches (better to give a powerfist to assault marine sarge).
Pickle you plasma-hog! Just stear clear of those gets-hot rolls
I personally prefer a launcher + melta combo, giving the sarge either pp+ccw or bp+pw. The old 'hidden power fist' thing never really caught on with me. Having the melta in the squad generally removed the need for a fist at close range, while its low AP helps burn holes in men too!
