If I read the rules (5ED) correctly, this is in fact the change made to the IC+Retinues formula (as opposed to IC joining squads). I think it is a move back to how things worked in 3ED, but it predates my 40K experience, so I cannot comment. With the flying Canoness being target-able at any time now, and the fact that Seras are not necessarily taken by all players, I was thinking if small WH Command Squads are possible?
5 models in a Rhino (smoke), 2 Evis, 2 Flamers, Book and Cloak will run around 250 points. Similar squad could be built around the Lord. If desired, we could swap Rhino for a Land Raider. Those points should be weighted against the usual 135-ish HQ of the 4ED.
Do you think that such squads could work and would be a good alternative to jumpy Canoness? Did you try them yet? What built would work in your eyes?
I find two jumping cannonesses are very good. You can hide them pretty easily behind rihnos or attach them to seraphim squads and then de attach them when they're ready to attack.
I suppose you could put your cannonesses into a "command squad" but it would be pretty expensive and your army would lack the ability to tie up units / killing them. So it would really hurt your battle sister's ability to stay alive and shooting.
Running one jumping cannoness and one cannoness in a rihno would'nt be too bad.
I have found my Jumpy Canoness to be more survivable than the rest of my army combined. In one 750 point game I played, I had lost everything other than her and had only taken out one squad of Assault Marines. I charged her into the middle of the enemy at the top of turn four and she was still there, completely surrounded in a sea of blue, at the bottom of turn six when I rolled end of game. In fact, the only game I have played where she died was when I failed the roll for Spirit of the Martyr (and did not take the Mantle) after charging a squad of Killer Kanz; the rest of the time there is usually the Canoness and, if anything else, a few random stragglers remaining. I am not sure how much more survivable I want her to be, but I certainly would not take away her versatility for such a small improvement.

"Do you want your heretic rare, medium or well done, Lord Inquisitor?"
My problem is that if I understand the rules correctly if my cannoness is within 2 " of a unit it auto joins. This means instead of making faith roles from her leadership they go by squad size and her armor save is now 3+ until she is no longer in the minority. Am I misinterpreting the rules?
Oh bell went off in my head. I have a squad of grey knights with my army. that would raise her toughness to 4 for "to wound" purposes. I may keep her solo after all. Not having the codex with me do you know if she can still use faith points when with a non SA unit? My thinking is probably not but will have to check.
