Basicaly My Friend Plays Orks and i Was Looking For Some Help In How To Defeat An Ork Army ...
Im New Two 40k , Hes a Mate That i Plyed LOTR With Back In The Day And Hes Biult An Ork Army For a While Now ....
Any Specific Wargear , Troop Choices , Tips & Tactics Are Greatly Apreciated,
O and What Stuff Of His Should i Watch Out For Apart From The Odvious CC Threat ....
Whats Your Thoughts ...
Quick question, do you know what kind of ork army he's doing? is it fast (all trukks and bikes), a huge horde of infantry? and if so is the infantry close combat of shooting based (shooting ork armies do exist as strange as that sounds).
There are a few things true when fighting any ork army though:
- Never ever let orks charge you if you can help it, it's better to sacrifice a turn of shooting and get the charge yourself if you're not sure the shooting will turn the orks away and stop them charging..
- Flamers are your friend vs horde armies, they WILL get close and they will hit close combat if you can get even 1 shot off with a flamer or 2 into a squad it'll make a huge difference.
- Dreadnoughts.. orks hate them.. a huge mob of 30 boyz will usually only have 1 or 2 models that can harm a dreadnought, use them to bog down large enemy squads in combat, in addition they can take heavy flamers which murder ork boyz.
- Heavy bolters, Assault cannons etc decent strength high number of shots, can down a few orks per shooting phase and are even strong enough to blow ork trukks to bits (a devestator squad with 4 H bolters will put out 12 shots a turn hitting and killing orks on 3's or glancing a trukk on a 5, penetrating on a 6)
- Vs fast orks target the trukks quickly, they're made of paper even bolter fire may be enough to bring them down.
If you have a lot of infantry do what i tend to do if things go badly and a lot of orks make it to you... put your units into ranks i.e. cheap units infront to take the charge.. they will die, use scouts or summin, behind them put tactical squads, veteran squads.. things with rapid fire weapons and flamers if possible and finally as the last line put your heavy weapons.
The orks hit and wipe out the front rank and are forced to stop in rapid fire range of the next, fire everything at them and have assault squads ready to charge whatevers left.
this works well vs ork hordes, units are so big they'll come at you in waves, this tactic will generally turn away 2 or 3 waves and hopefully by then the enemy are down to a number you can manage in combat.
Bottom line your primary objective vs ork hordes isn't to wipe them out with shooting.. you won't manage it don't bother trying (i've seen 1500 pt ork armies with 130 models).. no your primary objective is to get their numbers down so your marines can hold them and hopefully fight them back in close combat.
Afraid i can only really offer advice vs hordes of orks as that's all i've played against.
Hope it helps
What works for me is flamers, heavy flamers, heavy bolters, Frag and Krak Missle Launchers, My units Initiative, Drop Pods and Large Blast Templates. Thats usually a sound thing against orks
40k Ultramarines W-44 D-12 L-14 (This record is a combined from ArdBoyz and RogueTraderTourneys)
Warhammer Choas DaemonsW-4 D-0 L-2
the whirlwind is an orks worst nightmare 48 inch range strength 5 ap 4 large blast template for 85 pts a go i personally use 2 against orks in a 1500pt battle as it will take out whole squads with ease espally with the new template rules
blood angels 5000 pts
imperial guard 500 pts
orks 1000 pts
Countercharging Orks is an incredibly important tactic. Unless you're very confident of shooting doing the job (10 to 15 Orks versus 10 rapidfiring Marines should either wipe out the squad or leave so little left that they're no real assault threat anymore), it's almost always better to seize the initiative yourself because Orks rely very heavily on charge bonuses.
10 charging orks vs. 10 Marines = loss for the marines.
10 charging Marines versus 20 Orks? Probably either a win or a draw for the Marines. And once you're stuck in, your superior armour makes all the difference.
Under the new codex, the Ironclad Dreadnought ought to be a supreme Ork killer. Thicker armour, twin DCCW's, twin Heavy Flamers, Twin H-K missiles, and Grenades?!? Yes, please! I can't think of anything such a beast won't be able to kill!
The Thunderfire Cannon shows some real potential, too. Heavy 4 blast with the different firing modes it has should be good for any phase of the game - Surface blast when the Orks are in the open, Airburst when they're in cover, and Underground to cause damage and bog them down before they reach your lines!
And of course, the new Land Raider Redeemer. Only models with a 2+ save don't quake in fear at the thought of its Flamestorm Cannons, and even the 2+ save troops are worried. Ram one of these into a big mob and let the barbeque begin!
EDIT: Oh, yeah - Razorbacks with Twin Linked Heavy Flamers and a half dozen Marines inside, ready to support it? Wonderful for exterminating smaller groups of Orks!
A lot of great ideas have been put forward mate, so really the end decision is up to you but you really want to find out what type of army he plays (as was mentioned earlier).
Lots of ork mobs are best dealt with through sheer fire power from range - lots of bolter fire, a few missiles, and a little bit of plasma to take care of HQ's.
Lots of bikes/trucks and you'll need missile launchers, las cannons and meltas.
The general applicaion of my advise is to stand and shoot for as long as possible before making the last ditch charge to finish them off.
If you prefer to get stuck in early, it's a different ball game unfortunately - lots of close-combat attacks, assault marines and units with power-weapons would help finish them off faster =)
Hope you do well against your friend, let us know how you get on =)
Yes Ill Let You Know.
He Owns Two Trucks , Has Masses Of Boyz With One Of His Nobz In Each Sqaud, The Odvious Warboss.
He Also Likes Shoota Boys . . .
What Will Tear Him To Bits In CloseCombat , CC Terminators . . . ?
What Of His Should i Target First . . . ?
My Plan Is Too Shoot For As Long As Possible Then Maybe Rush a Landraider In Late On With Something Juicy Inside The Raider And Assault All i Can .
Ill Give Back To The Site With a Full Detailed Tactica Against Orks In Time , As i Have Yet To Find A Thread On It.
Once Again Thanks For The Help.

Get rid of the trukks first, they're easy enough to shoot down but if left alone will allow him to charge you 2nd turn.. not good.
Close combat termies can work, a squad of 5 lightning claws can cause orks a lot of problems, though personally i'd go toward normal termies with assault cannons or heavy flamers mixed in.. they put out a lot of anti infantry fire and can still perform reasonably well in close combat.
DO NOT TAKE ASSAULT TERMIES!!! They're really designed to hit high value targets where their weaponry makes every hit count... They're just not potent enough to wade through orks. If you're taking Termies, take shooty Termies, preferably with a Cyclone launcher or Assault Cannon. They're all but immune to incoming fire and they can pour on enough return fire to wreck a mob of Orks in a hurry. One of the most valuable ork killing squads if you can keep them shooting.
And Land Raiders... True, they're all but invincible to an infantry Ork army, but that 250 points would buy you a lot of Tactical Marines instead, and the Marines are basically guaranteed to cause more damage in the end.
First targets are always those that pose the greatest threat. Early on, this tends to mean big guns, powerful troops and fast transports - everything else is out of range at the moment. Given what he's got, you're looking at taking out the trukks, especially if they're full of boyz. I'd task your long range, high to mid strength guns to this - Lascannons, Krak Missiles, Autocannons. Heavy Bolters too, if you think you need them. Everything else (preferably including the HB's) should set about pummeling anything green in sight.
After that, with this army, you're pretty much looking at "what's closest, what's the biggest threat, and what can I not afford to let through?" for the rest of the game. You want lots of men on the field, and lots of bolters in their hands. Orks are all about quantity over quality, and that's how to beat them - nevermind the great guns, you want lots and lots of the OK guns!
I havent had many games of 40k yet and Just starting my marines so i am quite surprized no one has mentioned to take some new sternguard with there newish rules and different types of ammo they should prove formiddable against orks tho i am sure they come with a price like terminators. Predator destructors and vindcators(tank) seem a good choice to kill a good few mobs to
I like the idea of a squad of 3 tornado landspeeders they can throw alot of firepower at with plenty of choices in weapons, anti-personnal and anti tank but with paper armour i guess that is there downfall.
Just a quick question how would twin-linked heavy flamers work they dont need to roll to hit?.
Everyone else has post awesome advice can anyone post some advice on what character to take against orks to?
