Im looking at the possibility of kitting out a unit for a counter assault. This is purly speculative at the moment and looking at the units best for the job and the weapons to be used, i know guard and assaults are often ruled out by alot of people but i just hope to gain a good grasp of how effectivly this will work.
I beleive hardened vet would be equipped with shotguns only. Veterans (in command squads etc) can take a laspistol and ccw combo and replace the laspistol with a 2handed assault weapon and still use the ccw in an assualt on the same turn? Whist rough riders can replace there laspistols with shotguns freely and use still use the ccw also.
My first question is can i equip a model with a 2h weapon and a close combat weapon. Obviously were talking Vets, Hard Vets, and Rough Riders here. and if this is possible how many attacks would this grant (please break this down for me when answering if you can as to where each attack comes from).
Also any info or tactica relating to wargear, doctrines, special weapons with regards to using a unit this way would be helpful. Thanks
They wouldn't get a bonus attack for an extra CCW, since they only have one CCW and no pistol (which counts as an extra CCW). Therefore they would have just their basic number of attacks, plus one for charging if they did.
Prodesse Non Nocere
Eldar - Suranii Craftworld 0/0/0
Marines - Astrum Corvus 0/0/0
Guard - 55th Estor 1/1/0
Also note-worthy: Despite how termies sport 'em, storm bolters are two-handed :/
Yeah, but terminators are wearing what is effectively a tank, so its not all that odd.
You dont however need to give them a CCW if they are lugging shotguns around. they wont get any benefit and the hail of shot will go someway towards lessening their number of attacks back.
If they could take a power weapon on the other hand....

Well, according to the RAW, Models can be armed with 3 weapons and only one of them can be 2 handed. Not a bad idea but the problem is that Hard vets can either have lasguns, shotguns or CCW. If they had access to the armoury then yes, they could have shotguns and CCW.
If you want my opinion for a good counter-charge with guardsmen, use an armoured fist with close order drill and warrior weapons. If you manage to charge, your opponent might be surprised by the number of attacks you'll make.
Imperial Guard: 3000 pts
Chaos Daemons: 1000 pts
if you take warrior weapons, though, EVERY guardsman needs warrior weapons. not worth it. i'd just go for vets with 3x melta, heavy flamer, shotguns, and a sarge with bolter and powerfist.
I run a 10 man vet squad, with 2 meltaguns, 1 flamer, all shotguns and a powerfist. Seems to work pretty well as a counterassault unit to me!

Also, you should google "garfield minus garfield". Awesome.
Thanks for all the reply's. So basically i have to choose between a unit thats going to hit with alot of fire power then a lesser attack or a unit that got less firepower but a big charge. Im feeling 1x Vet unit with melta's flamers and shotgun and a sgt with power weapon. and then a small unit of rough rider with lances to scare off those termies.
On a side note: Im working on some designs for motorbike rough riders. Ive found a fairly effective method of using things like spare heavy weapons etc to build what looks like a small engine. ive taken the sprue frame and reshaped bits for bars and framework of the bike. Im looking for a good idea for a seat and handle bars atm if anyone has any. This is purly an experimental model mind u.
