with the 5th ed changes, templars have gone under a pretty big change. the mob templar army now has an almost guaranteed 2nd turn charge, with combat power still intact, as now we can put plasma wounds on scouts and heavy bolter wounds on marines. however, the mech templar army, with 2 lrcs at 1500 and 3 at 2000, brings an almost unstoppable wall of av14 that along with the abundance of 4+ cover, smoke launchers, and new vehicle armour rules makes their transports basically indestructable. both are fast, both are tough, both are choppy...which one is better, though?
I think this is the same old story in a new cover mate. There really isnt a "better" list between mob or mech army lists. Both are more suited to one scenario than annother, and both would survive better against different opponents. A few battlecannons would take care of a mob list where a lot of high strength hits from anything S9 or better would take care of those LRC's eventually. Remember it only takes a "Crew Shaken" roll to reduce that armoured beast to a large piece of terrain for a turn.
I would personally go with mobs myself, as having the men available to capture objectives is more important to me than having near-invulnerable mobile bastions, but like i said, there isnt a better or worse list, just a better or worse application of either list.
I was once told there is no such thing as the perfect list. There are some terrible lists out there which still prevail when used in the correct way on the battlefield, so dont strive for "whats best", just what you can use better =)
IMO, ultimately mech beats mob. Why? You can swamp the enemy in light armour (which is a suprisingly effective tactic that often goes unused) and you can easiyl get some fairly mobile units for contesting objectives. Not to mention BT have fairly poor anti tank and some hunter killer missiles can provide some of it (if you are so inclined). Failing that just some las preds + a wall of rhinos will ruin most opponents.
