    so in the little blurb about valhallans in codex imperial guard it says on the attack they mix artillery barrages with waves of infantry. which brought me to thinking. i know mortars seem to be hated by one and all, but can mortars and basilliks along with normal platoons be an awlright list? and maybe a hellhound? because thats startig to look like a list id like to play.

    Time doesn't wait for me. I go my own way.

    Motars in 40K are pants compaired to the real thing (believe me - I have been on the recieving end)

    But they can be used, generally basilisks coupled with a large infantry force can be damn effective, mortars can add to this but generally it works best with basilisks and inf, what you do is basically bombard the ever living hell out of him and force him to come to you, bringing him into hoards of laguns.

    You need to be carefull of:
    1 you dont get "toys for the boys" syndrome at the expense of hoards of lasguns
    2 your artillery (basilisks) doesnt get wiped
    3 You manage to destroy his armour
    4. you severely lack mobility, to counter this means pulling points away from the inf and tends to bring in rule 1, but not to counter it leaves the risk that you will not capture objectives
    Everything you have been told is a lie!

    Pants= Crap, rubbish etc

    Mortars in real life are Devestateing on moral and are very good at blowing infantry up.

    Iv played with a mortar before at Cadets (wen i used to go) and the Mortars in 40k are ***** compared!!

    I like using mortars. A squad of them can thin out opponent armies pretty good. Are they as good as a basilk, of course not. But they are cheap, have decent range and if you get some decent rolls can put a real hurting on people. They work best against things with lousy armor saves(nids, IG, tau etc), but i have reduced squads of sm with mortars on more than one occasion. If used properly they can benefit your army.

    Of course if you get bad rolls they can really sux, and be a waste of points. My buddies and I have made some scenarios where you can't use Arty(ordance type) but that you can use mortars, in these scenarios they are worth there weight in gold.

    have a good one.

    Tell me about, having been on the receiving end of the damn things vs LH19 there. I would recommend using them in groups of no less in three, and against lightly armored foes. They're not bad for the cost, so if you're going for the simulated arty/mortar barrage before the wave of infantry, do it. Truely an old Soviet tactic.
