So i was reading through the new dex and was looking to take up a command squad with Vulkan, but in the dex it says:
Command Squad...................................................................... ......
You make take one Command Guard squad for every Space Marine Captain in your army (including Captain Sicarius, Capt. Lysander, Shadow Capt. Shrike & Kor'sarro Khan). This unit does not count against your HQ allowance.
Is he exempt from this option or i'm i just being dumb and I can take a command squad with vulkan?? Any insite would be great.

He ain't a captain, he's a commander. If he isn't there, you can't take it!
Dont worry though. The Honour guard - although they dont have an apothecary - are far better and are a bargin for the number of power-weapon attacks you get in the price. Honour guard all the way mate
Vulkan counts as a chapter master?
If you have a pre-release copy of the codex, check out page 93, second paragraph on the left of the page reads "...the Chapter Council commanded he set down his burdens as commander of the 4th company and don the mantle of Forgefather."
basically, he was once the equivelent of a company captain, but is now the equivelent of chapter master.
Thanks for covering this, I knew he wasn't a captain but wasnt sure about his chapter master status either...
Er... no you can't take an Honour Guard either. Nowhere does it refer to He'Stan as a Chapter Master, and the entires for Marneus Calgar and Pedro Kantor both state they can take an Honour Guard (or 3 in Calgar's case).
He'Stan is no longer a Captain nor is he a Chapter Master, and as such he does not have access to a Command Squad or an Honour Guard.
Alright so... He'stan is completely Independent... well thats not all bad right?
Ya hestan is an independant character he is the forgefather. He cant take a command squad and he cant take an hounor gaurd. Just stick him with some sterngaurd or a tactical squad and he will do fine.
The best use for him i beleive is to stick him in a drop pod with sterngaurd vets and to drop him near an enemy unit and heavy flamer their face then follow up with meltas and more flamers. Which is all TWIN LINKED. which basically equals ownage. with a 2+ and 3+ and a S 6 power weapon he can handle himself really well against most things.
