So I've dusted off my Marines to upgrade the points for 5th and I've heard that the new version of your standard veteran squad, these Sternguard fellows, don't have the option to give them h+h weapons.
Instead my Vets have become "Vanguard" Veterans in the Fast Attack selection.
My question is then do I still have the ability to keep my Squad of 10 Marines with the following load-out:
Sarge: Powerfist, Bolt pistol
x1 Marine with Lightning Claws
x2 Marines with Power Weapons, Bolt pistol
x6 Marines with CC weapon and bolt pistols
I hope I havn't lost the ability to have the lightning claws in the unit as he is one of my favourite models.
First Company Veterans in a Fast Attack slot, can't be true.....has the Emperor gone mad?
that is entirely legal in the new codex. However that squad will cost an enormous amount of points and you should be very careful when playing with them because they still have a 3+ save which can be easily beaten.
As a quick count-up, that vanguard squad would cost 320points mate. If you dropped 5 of those BP/CCW models it would take the price down to 195 (a more reasonable cost!)
It may also be effective if you gave that squad jump packs, but thats a lot more points again.
Honestly, you may just want to convert those BP/CCW models to bolters, put that twin-LC model in as the sarge and use them as sternguard. They are a much better option =)
And keep in mind, that's a full squad, with full grenades, and the equivalent of Terminator Honours on everybody. 300 points for an assault unit producing well over a dozen Power attacks and a good two dozen standard attacks to back it all up?!? Sounds like a bargain to me!
And then there's the special characters... That squad (as well as every other squad) can then be given Outflank, Fleet, Stubborn, or the ability to pass or fail any and all Morale tests at will.
EDIT: 295 points, Rabbit. Only the first 5 cost extra for the Sarge, the extra guys are only 100 total.
full squad with jump packs only and a sarge with a power weapon is around 320 pts. I'd rather put 8 Terminators with thunder hammers and storm shields
If this was 4th edition it would be godlike...get into assault without being shot and then just massacre through shit. However, this is 5th, meaning that a super elite assault unit like vanguard will still end up getting shot with the brunt of an entire army having deep struck right in their face. Expect them to die quickly after massacring one unit.
The Vanguard are one of the heaviest hitting units for the marines, but I wouldnt put that many points to them.I just use the ones from the spearhead outright loaded up with a plasma CW and a razorback transport with twin LC and I average 20 kills a game. But then again thats against the Bugs so that might be why?
2 LC's, 1 fist, rest BP+CCW - job's a good'un.
It keeps cost down and is still pretty killy.
You however can never escape that the only truly cost effective CC killers marines can bring to the table are terminators, however their downside is they are fairly slow.
Vanguard are just super assault marines and while assault marines are good at killing enemy infantry they won't beat the specialists which is what marines struggle with (and rightly so). So IMO if you are going for vanguard think about it logically - you cannot compete on a specialist versus specialsit level but you can create squads that are fairly fast and will slice and dice anything short of other specialists.
