has anyone here ever purchased one of these massive box sets ?? the 445 one with 5 or 6 tanks and several squads etc ??
well me and a few other people were going to make a chapter etc and all chip in for one of these large box sets ; I was just wondering the boards opinion of the value of these, and if anyone has purchased one.
Well, I havn't actually purchased one but I know someone who did. I assume you're talking about the company set. If you look at the prices, you're actually getting a pretty good deal, that many marines and vehicles would cost a great deal more if you got them seperately. On the other side, it's $450 all in one go, easily out of my rice range. Plus, you then have to model and paint all of them, which is a fairly daunting task all by itself. My friend managed to do it because he he all of a sudden had a great deal of cash and a long time doing nothing (got hurt on the job and recieved a very nice please-don't-sue-us check) but even still, it took him on the order of about 2 months of modelling and painting up to 8 hours a day everyday to get it done.
Assault on Black Reach
167 quids worth of miniatures (300 dollars) in a £40 set (80 bucks)
Buy a couple, sell the stuff you don't need like the orks and watch an army grow at a small price
The boxes are a great deal but most people cannot put down so much money at once. I would love to but the problem is I need to get a feel for the army. I wish instead of that games workshop did a "Make your own army box" Pick 2x box of troops, 1x box of tanks, 1x box of fast, 1x box of elites, and 1x commander for a discount. That would be nice! It's fun to dream
I ordered the Space Marine Armored Strike Force from Games Workshop. It was not in a special army box. They just sent all the individual items in there seperate boxes.
I ended up sending it back and getting the Space Marine Strike Force from an online place which is its own box and added a Predator, Razorback and Close Combat Termies squad.
Saved a huge amount of money doing this. Did not pick up the bikes though, still cheaper even if I get them later.
I got one last christmas. It's awsome.
To do to finish it: 3x rhino's and 8x devastators to build, and three rhino's and 35 troops to paint. Still.
To be fair though i've also made up and painted a blood bowl team, two ravenwing boxes, thre dreads and three terminator squads etc etc.
I'm making the rhino's to have a full company on a apocalypse table, but may i suggest getting forgeworld upgrades for whirlwinds, predators etc as you will never really need 8 no. rhino's.
You get all the sprues for:
SM Command Squad
20 Assault Marines
60 Tactical Marines
Apocalypse vehicle bit sprue.
That's 106 men and 9 tanks.
As you get 5 command squad leg sprues total (1x command squad and 4 sprues for devastators), and each has a 6th pair of legs (kneeling as extra), and the assault marines have spare torso's coming out of your ears that's 5 extra men.
I did mine as Dark angels, (I also had a squad and a rhino already) since i put every Heavy Weapon, Sgnt and the command squad in robes that was 6x vet boxes, and I have 35 marines spare (and alot of Terminator and weaponry bits spare - I now after trading with black reach owners have 5no terminator squads, so gave 3 squads all matching shoulderpads as a type of uniform.)
With so many bits spare too I'm going to do a offshoot marine army with every single chestpiece, helmet, boltgun and backpack identical (the single skull one) painting them a deep, dark colour, and picking the skull out in white so it stands out more. And i'd have a 1,500 point vanilla marine now GW have poked DA's in both eyes. Sigh, i was seriously considering Imperial Fists. The decided is that the old inks went out of production. (No Inking a 4:1 yellow:chestnut ink mix over a white undercoat for a 5 minute marine paint job.)
You're painting will speed up, and there's approx 3500 points in there (depending on equipment and chapter)

I'm far too broke to have picked up the $450 box, but I did have the luck to afford a Strike Force, and it was worth the cash. Though even just 25 marines, a commander, and 5 tanks (one of which is a Land Raider) is a very daunting task. Sadly I am unable to field a Whirlwind (BT are not known for their artillery). Silver lining; EXTRA RHINO. Heck yes. So yes, the box sets are definitely worth it if you can afford them.
I saw on the Online Store a massive apocalypse army, with 8 Rhinos, and 70 Tactical Marines (7 squads). It had about 110+ models for £275.
i would buy one but id look at all that stuff adn think urgh - i really cant be bothered
WELL SAID, NO MORE SQUATS THEY ARE DEAD GET OVER ITOriginally Posted by artificer
I own a small game store and I got one of those Space Marine Battle Companies for myself, and we ended up selling about 5-6 more. They are a fantastic bargain. First I finished up my Ultramarines battle company (I was 2 tac squads, 1 dev squad, and 1 assault squad short). Then I built a 2000 point Blood Angels army. I still have about 35+ marines left on the sprue which I will use to make Sternguard Veterans (I will include lots of extra flashy bits and special shoulder pads etc), and then I am not sure what I will do with the rest. Maybe I will make up some Crimson Fists...
I love having all the extra rhinos, (I got so I could build one from sprue to finish in under 30 minutes!) and I bought some extra razorback turrets so I can easily swap back and forth between r'backs and rhinos. I am really glad I did that, considering the new life that has been given to the razorback with the new codex...
Once a Marine, always a Marine.
