Just wanted a quick bit of advice, I've just picked up the Assault on Black Reach box for a quick and easy way to get some new marines, what I wanted to know are what else should I get as a top priority to get a decent army together?
I currently have the Black Reach contents, 1 Tactical Squad (of 10 ), 1 Terminator squad (of 5) and a Landspeeder, what do you think I should get next?
On a side note, what happened to Squats while I was away? They don't seem to exist anymore?
Also, is there any reason that I can't use the Veteran Marine w/lightning claws as a character instead of just sticking to the actual use as part of the veteran squad?
Cheers in advance!

Next get one or two more tactical squads. Then for some more punch, get either assault marines or devastators.
Yes you can use the guy with LC as a character. A captain would be a great choice!
I prefer marines over vehicles.
Squats are gone, or rather, they no longer ever existed...or whatever. A friend of mine made a home-made codex for the squats and he plays them once in awhile. Cool models.
Once a Marine, always a Marine.
I'll probably get an extra tactical and an assault squad then - much prefer taking things up close and personal.
Is the command squad any good?
I've had a look at it and the figures do seem quite impressive, especially the guy with the sheild/bolt pistol combo/power sword...
Tacticals are where it's at, especially with combat squads now.
And yes, 10 assault marines > 5 by far. Put a power fist on your sarge and use 2 plasma pistols.
Squats are gone. Apparently the nids ate them, but many players have used the IG codex to create armies of them. Getting the old metals is a challenge -- I saw a thread elsewhere with a whole army of them. I can't imagine where/how he got them all.
Also if you can find an ork player who bought BR too and trade his marines for your orks. And it might not be bad to get a small tank vindicator or predator maybe?
The command squad is pretty good. It is expensive. The company champion has a power weapon (he is hte guy with the shield you like), and it is an upgrade to get him. (He also gets a 5+ invulnerable save in CC ). In the new codex, command squads automatically come with an Apothecary, which gives the whole squad "Feel No Pain," which is a BEAUTIFUL little feature. Basically if you take a wound from a failed armor save, you can roll again and on a 4+ you ignore the wound like it did not happen.
The command squad is a little pricey, (game-wise) but they are very "fluffy" and since they are all veterans they all have an extra attack in their profile and can be terrors in close combat. Be warned though...you can REALLY spend a ton of points giving them all great upgrades, but they will die just as fast as any other marine.
Once a Marine, always a Marine.
suxs the that the invunerable for thre combat sheild got moved to +6.
Anyway, fluff reasons as well as the extra attacks makes a command squad great in cc, but has i was taught very painfully( traded 845pts of command squad termie squad and assault squad for 415pts of meka nobz and didn't even scratch lord Gazual or whatever the green little bastards name was.) that they still succumb to the limitations of the normal marine stats. Nothing to gripe about just shows how it can turn out badly.
Also tac squads and assault squads are great additions for an SM cc army

...Huh. Well how 'bout that - they did. Wow.
I can't for the life of me imagine why they went and did that - I tended to use the old combat shields for a cheap invulnerable save for assault Sergeants, and they barely ever managed to make a save when it was 5+! Dropping it to a 6+ is getting to the point of making it worthless wargear... Why waste the points on something that's all but guaranteed to do absolutely nothing when you need it?
Cheers for the responses, after all this I think I'll end up getting an extra tactical squad, an assault squad, the command squad and that veteran mini with the power claws for a captain.
Nice to see things haven't changed community wise in the last 10 years! Still as helpful as ever!
