I was just wondering if anyone bothers with the extra points to give your officers the carapace armour wargear?
It just seems like a waste of 5 points that i could spend on something else.
I suppose it could be useful in assaults were your enemy could single him out, but other than that, and against shooting, you use majority armour saves plus making sure my command squad is in cover makes Carapace armour redundant as a shooting defence...
While I am on the subject, for the same reasons as above, i see no real point to giving my officers the refractor field, as cover saves make it redundant, its expensive (15pts for a 5+ inv save), and is a save you can't rely on (as statisticaly you will fail it on more occassions than you will pass it).
Back to the carapace armour, the only 2 uses i can see in it are:
a). being able to take a save from a flamer, thus denying your opponent a cheap wound on my officer.
b). better save on a plasma pistol overheating (thus avoiding another cheap wound)
anyway it would be cool to hear what experiace anyone else (good or bad!) with these 2 items, and if good, to what effect.
I've never used them, bar apocalypse WYSWYG.
For shooting re the majority save, not anymore you don't. you allocate the wounds per mini eg:
Command squad (5 men) inc. officer and carapace hit by 5 boltgun shots.
You allocate one wound to each, the unfortunate guardsmen all die (5+ save vs AP5), and the officer, with a 4+ save rolls for his life. (Or, go to ground for a 6+ save on the guardsmen.)
It would help r.e. plasma and melee, but i'd rather shove the points into more heavy weapons. If you're in melee you should just accept death.

i do give carapace armour to my HSO, because i normal vs SM as they have bolter and i find it does give my HSO a better chance of surving. but for a refractor field i would never use them as they are usless
Partial agreeing with Doom Marine there, I like having the 4+ save, just for tiny re-assurance. Do not like the Vox though. But, that's not the point of this thread.
I've tried to find a way to sneak a combat oriented Officer in the mix here and there, but have not found success other than to ally with some grey knights.
Call me crazy, I'm the kind of guy who pops a Refractor Field and Carapace onto my characters. If nothing else it does give me the satisfaction that if I get into cc, I know that my officers can withstand a power weapon or anything of that nature.
Other than that I see where carapace and refractor fields have their useage, just depends on what you're worried about.
I'll be damned before the soldiers of the Emperor are just left to rot!
