Hey, im recently going to star an IG army but what I like to do is to start on my Hq first. SO, my question is what would I want to take for my Command Squad to ensure that they will not be harmed but if attackers move in, the attackers will be?
Well command squads have the option of being extremely high damage/ high threat squads or being just another batch of five useless meat shields for your big guns.
Most people take advantage of the ability to max out on special weapons. (every marine heavy weapon will be aimed at the squad armed with four plasma guns).
I have also seen people use them as mobile anti infantry heavy weapon. This is done by takign a transport, and giving the squad a heavy weapon. It works pretty well against light infantry armies.
The problem with making them powerful is that powerful units attract the attention of the enemy. If you want to get maximum power with minimum threat generated. Take four flame throwers. A lot of people over look flame throwers.

Cool, thanks alot dude ^_^
i find that usually 2 special weapons (plus a standard bearer for the hq platoon) makes for a decent choice, not too strong to get singled out by enemy fire and not too weak to be useless.
i prefer grenade launchers as my ranged weapon of choice, due to the versatility of frag/krak and that it's an assault 24" range weapon.
or 2 flamers for units made to get close to the enemy (especially used in drop troops); auto-hitting s4 templates are boss (as long as you DS scatter close enough to spray onto the enemy).
generally, aside from the special weapons, i always give everyone else simple lasguns (meaning the officers and sgts too).
command squads are your best source of mobile fire support. 3-4 commands with 4xplasma or 4xnades and officer with bolter running around can bolster a sagging line VERY well...32 plasma shots ftw . yeah, marines are going to aim every heavy bolter they have at your commands, but think of it this way: every heavy bolter aimed at a command squad, preferably sitting in cover, is 3 less s5 ap4 shots aimed at your guardsmen sitting on the objective.
