My army is building up nicely now, just want another Elite unit to flesh it up a little and so far I'm leaning towards Hardened Veterans. Reasons being I quite like the usefulness of the unit, and also because I'm looking forward to converting my own vets, and also I have all the bits handy, so I don't have to buy some metal stormtroopers.
As a whole, I'm not giving Carapace to many of my troops. Generally just my specialist and important units. But I was wondering if its legal to give Hardened Vets the Carapace Armour upgrade?
The codex states that Guard Infantry and Rough Riders can have the upgrade... and the Vets are infantry I guess! But then they are not a troops choice, they are an elite slot.... so I'm a little confused wheither or not its allowed?
Oh i see. Thanks for clearing that up
So if I'm to understand correctly, if I use the doctrine, EVERYONE that can have it, must have it, so here comes extra point cost along with it.
And if I don't select the doctrine... then only characters that can access wargear (officers, vet sarges etc) can select carapace. That right?
Although carapace armor can be chosen to apply only to rough riders instead of the entire army.
Indeed, 5 points per model. Though with Carapace it's 2 per model.
Ah, it all makes sense now. Thanks guys. And Carapace looks quite a lot less appealing for a doctrine...
It seems kind of unfluffy for everyone in my particular army to have decent armour. Their faith in the Emperor is supposed to keep them safe... well in theory at least!
Though one of my friends armies that I'll be playing against is Space Marines, so I'm sure the lovely attention of those bolters might force me to reconsider at some point. But at the moment, my main force will be content being human shields I think....
Yeah I do agree that Carapace definately has its place. Espically for heavy armoured troop regiments. But in terms of my regiments fluff I only planned for certain units to be armoured to the teeth. Supported by less well equiped units.
Plus it totally messes up my points cost and I'll have to rearrange as I have quite a few infantry squads.
But I can definately see where your coming from against those space marines, that 50-50 armour save can make all the difference, as opposed to not having one! Carapace is definately a good option.
In terms of game this Doctrine is far too expensive. Command Squads buy it at 4 points per model, Heavy Weapon Teams a bit less, Veteran Minimum squads are far more expensive. If you want your Guardsmen to be bolter-proof buy them Cameleolie, stick to Cover, fire at will and see oponnents irritation when you get 3+ Cover save. Power-cover?
Not to mention the situation when your 5 boys stick to cover in his very last round of the game near obejctive and he wants to drive them off with bolter fire cause he cannot reach them with charge move. Go to ground... priceless!
