Hey everyone. I played marines (Salamanders, hence my name) in 3rd edition. Traded in the marines for eldar, and now for Nids and Necrons. I helped my friend get into the hobby a few weeks ago. We bought Black Reach (What an amazing deal!!) and i taught him how to play. With Black Reach he has:
1 Tactical Squad
He wanted some more models and bought:
5 Assualt Marines
5 Extra marines (bolters)
What do you suggest he get next? I am always an advocate of bodies on the batlefield and not loading up on wargear. I suggest some sniper scouts, and another tactical squad.
I havent played marines since the days of the RhinoRush so I need you informed individuals with this question.
More marines is always good, but you're going to want them in squads of 10 to make the most of combat squads and free weapon upgrades.
What I'd recommend is grabbing the Battleforce. It has 15 marines (enough for 3 squads of 10), 5 assault marines (full squad of 10), 5 scouts (cheap shooty scoring unit), a Captain and Command Squad (shiny bits and wargear), and a Rhino. That could easily get him past the 1000 point mark.
Also, if possible, he should try to get some bits for Dreadnought weapons and Terminator heavy weapons. A multi-melta is not the best outfit for a Dread, an Assault Cannon or 2 twin-linked autocannons being preferable. And for Termies, a cyclone or assault cannon goes a long way to making the squad much more powerful. See if he can trade with other players or try to order the bits online.
Thanks for the advice Me.
First and foremost, i will make sure he grabs a copy of the new codex. i forgot that came out. And it seems squads of ten marines are being emphasized. Mass bolter fire is sooo under rated.
Any ideas of expansion other then a battleforce. He has a habit of blowing all his money, and i wanmt to make sure he likes the game before he spends almost 100..
First thing he'll need is 2 Troops, so that's going to be 2 Tactical Squads. 5 marines is all he needs, but I'd go for another Tactical box just to get the heavy weapons and other gubbinz. Scouts are good too for some extra firepower and objective grabbing. 4 snipers and a heavy bolter would be a good start.
