I was looking at using a Master of the Forge as my army's commander, but wasn't sure as I can't find an actual model for it and he doesn't appear to have any invulnerable save.
What model would people recommend using? Do GW make a techmarine model by itself that has the full servo harness, or is the only one the model that is only available from their online store?
You maybe able to buy the techmarine with the servitors model seperatly via direct order, however, I'd use the direct order only techmarine as it is a really sweet model.
Alternatively it also opens up the possibility for a nice little conversion project.
Yeah, I was looking at that. can you order one through the local GW store, or do you have to order online? also, do you know how much postage would be?
I plan on trying to convert one myself, converting a conversion beamer should be a fun challenge - I plan to modifying the Servo Harness so that it's the harness "arms" that carry the conversion beamer.
Nice idea with the servo-beam-holder-arms.
But back to the original question.
There are multiple options to make an individual techmarine.
the first ones are to simply buy a techmarine from GW.
there are 4 different ones counting the Thunderfire techmarine in.
Second, you could buy the iron warriors warsmith of chaos wich is available through direct order.
it may be chaos but when your not shy of converting you can have a hell of fun with it.
and third option, build one from scratch when your good at modelling and converting.
but you will have to convert the beamer by yourself,
i personally think that's great because i am a fanatic converter ^^
there is a fourth option though when your lazy.
just wait long enough to let ForgeWorld or GW to bring a fitting model out.
Back when you could I ordered the techmarine body on its from from the techmarine + servitors box, just to see if I could make a suitable commander model out if it. I couldn't and it's been armless ever since.
Then I got the new spear head and I've used the servo harness from the thunderfire techmarine for my new master of the forge model armed with a terminators thunder hammer and storm bolter. It looks cool enough for me (how difficult is it to super glue those tiny little arms to the servo harness? i've got a permanent imprint of a plasma cutter on my thumb)
Then, also from the spearhead, I steal Chronus servo arm back pack and stick it to the thunderfire techmarine - it's not quite WYSIWYG, being a servo arm rather than harness - but I know the folk I play with won't mind.
Failing that, you could possibly use the Iron Warriors chaos lord - he comes armless and doesn't look half as chaotic as he probably should.
I can't say I've seen it all but I live for the things that keep me hollow.
If you're giving him a conversion beamer, he loses the harness anyways.

Actually I have a converted model that can be used as a Master of the Forge... now the Iron Father is out of the picture...
Thanks to all the people showing faith in me
I sometimes feel that everyone will leave me and they will be on their own...
I just built a model using the Mechanicus type marine parts from some vehicle sprues and converted a lascannon into his conversion beamer.
Do people think that conversion beamer is worth it? it's not really that great unless you are playing on a really big board and most are 4' by 4', with terrain blocking a lot of line-of-sight.
I keep imagining him taking on maybe a dreadnought, blasting it with a combi-meltagun and then ripping it's arms off with the servo harness while smashing it on the head with a thunder hammer. If I had the spare cash I would love to do a diorama of that (sadly I don't).
