Alright i was just reading the topic of the week made by Cadaver Junkie (reps to your awesome topics, they do help us infantry men out there ) and i noticed the arguement on the Leman Russ on the 5th edition changes. Now that defensive weapons are considered to be only strength 4 and down, how do you tool up your Leman Russ. In my case i'm about to build my Leman Russ Battle Tank with 3 x Heavy Bolters. I'm going to use it with conjuction with a chimera armored fist squad with a Heavy Bolter Team to try and take objectives. The Battlecannon takes out any toughness 4 and up models or other tanks, hopefully on their sides, and the chimera (counting as open topped) shooting either a multi laser and the infantry's heavy bolter (i have no idea what equipment i'm going to put on the chimera, or even if that tactic is viable) to take down infantry.
Now then the question is, how do you tool your Leman Russ, and is there any other upgrades i should add or remove to mine?

I know most folks on here don't like the layout and I have heard a million reasons why it isn't ideal.......
But I still stick with with the Hull LC and the sponson HB's.
I like the LC as a back up if the BC gets popped.
And the HB's get used if I want to shoot at some sparsely grouped, low toughness/armor targets.
And I love my pintle stubber.
I think every LR should have a pintle gun. Either the stubber or the storm bolter.
Totally agree with Dedsquirrl with the lascannon layout. More often than not, you'll be facing many different unit types on the battlefield and variety is SOMETIMES useful - not always. If you make your Lemans specialised, that still ok.
You may want to try out plasma cannons
I think that some extra armor is a cheap way to protect you crew. I like the 3x HB set up. YOu get 9 shots that will do damage to the same type of enemy. With a lascannon and 2 HB's, you get 7 shots, but the targets you are shooting at with your lascannon will probably not get scratched by your HB's. If you go with the lascanonn though, try not to waste the 10 points on the two HB's on the side.

As for LRBT options I'm going with the following:
2 HB sponsons, 1 hull HB, + pintle stubber for 167 points.
So I can either sit and fire the ordinance weapon, or fire the sponsons, hull HB and stubber...or I can move and fire the sponsons + stubber.
I used to roll with three heavy bolters but now I trim all of that and take one hull mounted. On a good day I should only be shooting the battle cannon anyway. If I get to many weapon destroyed rolls then maybe I'll go back.
I typically roll with one 3x HB+HS and two LC/HBs. The dakka Russ has made it's points back in over half the games I've played with her, whereas the other two threaten everything on the board with two lascannons, four heavy bolters, or two battlecannons.
Hands down though, the dakka russ is the most fun to play. I love watching people's faces fall when it gets seven wounds on their necrons or zoanthropes!
I'm going to have to say, I'm in the same school as Ded when it comes to tank loadout. For example, DRK0, I really don't care that what I shoot with a lascannon won't be hurt by the HBs often enough; It would be even LESS hurt if I had a third HB, so instead of being a negligable threat, I've become a credible threat.
And yeah, it might be two less shots than I might have with a third HB, but, honestly, whatever that lascannon hits is dead, no matter what (unless its a tyranid. Then its only mostly dead. But that goes regardless.) and I still win. I personally love when my russ opens up with all guns, and I end up with 6 HB, 1 LC and 3 HS rounds plowing downrange. Its damn near frightening!
Of course, there IS my exterminator, which IS kitted out with the 3 HB selection...but then again, my Exterminator is unique in that I have a special custom datasheet for it as well that's still in playtest: the HBs have all been replaced with twin-linked Heavy Stubbers for a number of extra points. That is true fright: 12 HS rounds plus 2 autocannon rounds, with all but 3 of the shots having the ability to re-roll to hit. Its a monster. But like I said..a datasheet thats still in playtest as I try to work out the kinks in the costs.
Drop the sponsons under 5th Edition, and I agree with the Lascannon hull mount and pintle heavy stubber.
Because I use drop troops I use the improved coms to get that re-roll.
With the new rules, the sponsons are a waste except on a Baneblade variant.
My Armor Is Contempt.
IMHO Heavy flamer sponsors excelled in 4 ed! (city fighting anyone?)
In 5th our Rushes got totally nerfed, If they move only one weapon + stabber can shoot.. what the hell?
I agree D-R-O-P sponsors! Keep 'em only if statically defending something.
