As title suggest, I would like to find out if anyone tried to combine models from Assault on Black Reach starter box with bitz from "regular" line of GW models. Things like Dread arms (assault canon or missile launcher), Terminator close-combat arms (claws, thunder-hammer, shields) - do they fit the snap-in Marines? What about Forgeworld parts? Have any pictures?
Reason for my post is that someone mentioned to me that regular Dreadnought arms are not replaceable with AOBR models, but I am sure that a lot of people will try to do that in coming Weeks. Thanks in advance from all the modelers that are looking for this info!
Yes, I have tried to combine the arms forthe Dreadnought from AOBR and a regular one. My regular is already done with magnets so I can swap both sets of arms and mix and match.
Thre is a minor problem using the regular arms on the AOBR one. The opening for the joint is much larger than the peg from AOBR body. I began modifying the body of the AOBR to fit a magnet in for the existing magnet in the arm, but the weight still aims the arm straight down. Now I had better success doubling up on the magnet inside the body, but it still wasn't as pose-able and holding for my liking. I wound up removing the modification, and just sticking with keeping the AOBR Dread as is. And making my other one the *versatile* one.
Now on the CCW arm of the AOBR, you can cut off the storm bolter and glue on the heavy flamer, its a little oversized but it still works.
I'm interested in Terminators, I don't have a set of *regular* termies, but I was wondeing if I just grabbed up a CC weapons sprue would I be able to mix and match with the AOBR ones.
Alright, here's what I've got for you:
Terminator Arms- the most compatible parts in the box. I bought some of the old metal assault arms, and they went on just fine (aside from metal-to-plastic issues). New arms? I'm not so sure of. However, the pegs are located at the shoulder, so if you cut them off, I'm sure you could attach anything you wanted.
Dreadnought Arms- I'm sorry but this is a no go. The AOBR arms are just a hair smaller. This means that you can put old weapons on the model with a bit of glue, but you can't 'snap' them on to make them interchangeable. The backs of the AOBR arms are also hollow. This means that you can't just shave the pegs off your old dread and glue the arms to it. If you wanted to get really involved, I guess you could use some extra sprue or greenstuff to build up a mount in the AOBR arms, and then magnetize all your dread arms.
Marine Arms- the AOBR marines are snap-fit. Their hands are already holding onto guns, and they just snap into holes in the wrist. At first this seems like it puts an end to your options, but really you're fine. My special-weapons marine used a set of extra Bolter-carrying arms and I just had to carefully detach the hands at the wrist. I then pinned them (you could just glue them) to the AOBRs wrist, and now I had empty hands. That atleast lets me use extra flamers, plasmas, meltas, and the like in that model's hands.
Similarly, Sicarius has a bolter in one hand, and a sword in the other. Kind of stupid combo. The Bolter, unfortunately, is hard-mounted to him. The way he's holding it, it'd be nearly impossible to remove (he's couching it in his arm, instead of gripping the handle). His other arm though, carrying the sword, is a peg-fit just like the marine hands. This arm could be swapped out for a pointing hand, or whatever else you want. I have always though of putting a librarian's book there, so he looks like he's reading something with his gun at rest.
Orks- the AOBR orks are the same way. However, they have their heads as pin-fits. So I suppose you could mess with that if you wanted. The commander is huge, and if you wanted you could mess with his kit by chopping at the wrists and arms. However, he's a great model, and I'd leave him alone.
DeffKoptas- the AOBR DKs are all armed with the rokkits. I saw a gent in the shop cut off all the missiles before glueing the model together, and then carefully gluing the barrels for several ork Big Shootas in their place. It looked alright, he staggered them and made them look like a battery of 4 guns firing.
I've done some work with the Orks - the black reach nobs work pretty well with regular nob arms - was able to power claw one of them that way. The boyz are a little less useful - you can still replace their one arm but I don't see any way possible to make them shootaz that is easy and effective.
As for the marines, the guy I traded with did some conversion on the captain but hasn't done anything with the rest.
In addition to arms the chest fronts on the terminators are interchangable with the conventional ones. Putting the conventional front on a black reach body requires trimming the cylyndrical piece protruding from the middle of the back. The black reach front fits right on a conventional back, no extra work required.
