    The redundancy of the Ravenwing

I have 1000 points of Ravenwing. I just got the new SM Codex. Let's do a comparison.

Dark Angel Codex - current Ravenwing army

    Sammael = 205 pts

Bike Squadron (Six bikes, flamer, meltagun, power weapon) = 250 pts
    Attack Bike (multimelta) = 50
    Landspeeder (AC/HB) = 100

Bike Squadron (Six bikes, flamer, meltagun, power weapon) = 250 pts
    Attack Bike (multimelta) = 50
    Landspeeder (AC/HB) = 100

    Total: 1005 points

Space Marine Codex - hypothetical "Ravenwing" army

Khan, plus his bike = 205 pts

Bike Squadron (Eight bikes, flamer, meltagun, power fist) = 255 pts
    Attack Bike (multimelta) = 50
    Landspeeder (AC/HB) = 90

Bike Squadron (Eight bikes, flamer, meltagun, power fist) = 255 pts
    Attack Bike (multimelta) = 50
    Landspeeder (AC/HB) = 90

    Total: 995 points

So I'm thinking about using the new codex to represent my Ravenwing. For ten fewer points, this is what I gain...
    • The ability to choose to fail morale tests (MUCH "fluffier" for Ravenwing than Fearlessness).
    • Two power fists.
    • Four bikes. Four!
...and this is what I lose:
    • A plasma cannon on a jetbike.
    • An apothecary.
    • Fearlessness.
    • Fewer units - I can't have 2 landspeeders and 2 attack bikes all independent.

All the old Specialist Games resources are currently being uploaded at the Tactical Command forums, and you can find them here: http://www.sg.tacticalwargames.net/fanatic/.

Yeah, I was a faithfull Blood Angel Player, then got my hands on the new Vanilla Codex, and I have to say that Dark Angels and Blood Angels Codices are now obsolite IMHO.

Sure Dark A. Can have a Termie Army, oh well I would never use that, too expensive and once sided.

Sure Blood can have a jump marine army, but oh well that mobility bows down to the new and improved Marines Mark VIII

Teleport homers are meaningless on a pure RW army, at least normal marines get them as optional.

Khan can have his army outflank and they don't have to suffer from being Fearless, plus a squad can get Furious Charge and Hit and Run.

I really like Sammael and the Apothecary/Standard, but the new book represents RW very well and ends up being better. Typical White Scars, one-upping the Ravenwing since Index Astartes.

That was probably a *real* benefit back when lead Termis were US$2 each.
Now that they're ten bucks for plastic? Not so much.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but

I quite enjoy the fear in the eyes of my opponents when I answer their question "So where do you have your two standard units?"

I haven't purchased the new Marines Codex and I doubt I will because so far I have seen nothing that tempts me to switch. I am not experienced enough to judge on the Dark Angels but since I am a fluff player, I'd probably stick with the Dark Angels Codex as well.
