i just pulled out my ogryns and painted them real nice, and then i decide to read up on them in my codex. Why did GW make them so crappy!?!?!?!?!? They didnt seem too bad last time I read them a couple of months ago, but upon recent inspection......yeah. i thought the bone 'ead could take a mastercrafted power weapon.......but no it cant. I find it rediculous. our elites cant even get a power weapon, except for a stormtrooper sergant, but they aren't even combat models. it upsets me so much that such an awesome model is so crappy. GW should not make such awesome models if you cant successfully use them in a game. techpriests first, now this. ogryns can no longer be used as a counter offensive unit b/c of the new targetting rules. They can be ousted very easily. This may seem like a flaming post against GW, but it isnt. now that i vented my anger, can anybody give me advice how to use them successfully b/c i really do want to use them in my army. I am a tread-head and have at my disposal 5 sentinals, 5 chimeras, a demolisher and a bassie. i play against SM, eldar, DE, chaos, tau, and nids. Thanks much
I have to agree with you. I really like the Ogryn models so much that I bought and painted 5 of them and I was planning on doing a second squad of them. After I played them in a few games, though, I realized that they are just crap.
There's no army in the game aside from Necrons and Tau that don't go at the same time or before them in CC, so be prepared to lose a couple of them. Your enemy has a powerfist or better? Well, kiss the whole squad goodbye because 3 wounds per model don't mean squat when your TO is only four.
A Bonehead doesn't have enough access to the armory for my tastes and the only weapon the regular Ogryn can have are the ripper guns. They have almost the least options that I've ever seen for an elites choice, aside from Ratlings.
GW is going to have to improve either their armor save or give them a TO of five before I will put them in my army again. At the very LEAST their initiative should match a marines initiative.
Actually, I don't think they should be much better than they are, but they should be cheaper. I mean, they are big targets who are lousy shots, they should die alot :)
One thing they could do is allow you to put a commissar in the ogryn squad instead of the HQ's, that would give them a bit more punch and would be VERY fluffy.
But this discussion is nearly meaningless, the new codex is not going to be replaced any time soon.
Well, I used Ogryns with the old Codex, when they were worse than they are now. And I still use them now. They don't need a 20 point Master Crafted Power Weapon to be effected in melee.
I still like Ogryns. Even if nobody else does.
don't use ogryns against power armor, and REALLY don't use them against anything with a powerfist...
but other than that, they work O.K.
personally i hate the models, but i also hate ratlings.. dirty mutant scum
you can always throw an independent commissar with them (right?).
if you want countercharge, go either ruff riders or conscripts. if you want hidden powerfist go Veterans.
imho, i can't see ogryns as really effective, but if you like em, use em.
try keeping them in chimera (to avoid be shot up) and moving to where they're needed. they probably wont win, but will hopefully tie up the enemy for a turn or two.
Actually, I still used Ogryn until they made the Anti-Rhino rush rules. After that, though, they became much less effective for this reason:
I drive up, jump out and shoot with them. Next turn the enemy shoots them to pieces and kills maybe half of them (All of them if a couple squads of marines shoot at them), then they charge and go first which usually kills the rest. This is all due to the fact that IG are practically the only army that doesn't have a vehicle that can be charged from now.
Just want to make a bit about Ogryn's Initative. It would not be very fluffy if they were the same as SM. Ogryns are meant to be a bit slow just like orks only not green. So I say leave the initative alone, they can change the toughness if they want.

Ummmm, fluff and game have nothing to do with each other; other than a couple of special characters having names from books and stuff.
I started a whole thread about this a little ways back with examples and all.
I just wish they weren't 25pts each. There stats aren't all that bad but for 25pts you can just get a GK.

I thik that the Ogryns toughness could go up but the initiative could stay the same, an Ogryn is about a quarter of a step removed from an Ork so it make sense they're not going to be the sharpest tool in the shed..
But the cost could come down, you can get a Grey Knight in Power Armour for the same cost and he is competant in shooting and really nasty in CC, plus he get's all sorts of special rules, I think the Ogryn could see a bit more usage if they were cheaper.
