Well after the livley devastator discussion i am curious to know what is preferred in your tactical squads? i was going to use missle launchers but they are all going towards the dev squad now. So here is the question: What is your tactical squads heavy weapon of choice and why?
The humble Missile Launcher is my Tac-Squad Heavy Weapon of choice. It gives you anti-infantry with the blasting Frag, anti-armour with the armor-munching krak, and it is free. Its hard to pass that up.
Plasma Cannon, since it's ridiculously cheap compared to its Devastator squad counterpart and I absolutely love the weapon. Who cares if it MIGHT turn the holder into a pair of smoking boots?
Iron Swords 3rd Company - We are the swords which reap the bodies of our foes.
Train of thought will be terminating at.. edible murder weapons!
Mine is the Multi Melta... I just love shooting with that Cannon ^^
And its free ^^
Multi-Meltas and Missile launchers.
I honestly feel the Multi-Melta is under-rated. Yes, its a single shot weapon, but its capable of insta-killing most models that have more than 1 wound - which is ideal on tactical squads that have to be on the front line taking hits from the enemy while the rest of the army do what they do best - kill stuff! =)
Hmm so the multi melta or the plasma cannon huh? i currently have two tactical squads and think that one of each wouldn't be a bad choice and would add some variety. i do agree with catalyst on the missle lauchers versatility however i am using everyone of them for a devastator squad.
thanks for the suggestions guys.
It really depends on who you are fighting.
vs. Pwr Armour - take PLas Cannon
vs. Tank - Melta
vs. Horde - Heavy Bolter
vs. ALL comers - Missile Launcher
Personally, I think the plasma cannon is the best deal. You can take out heayv infantry, espeically terminators and such like as well as lighter vehicles pretty easily. The blast template is the same as the one for frag missilea nd to way more damage, so they are pretty good at horde killing too.
Meltas are too finnicky to use well - ok if drop podding or if you get vehicle rushed.
ML's are ok, but yeah, better used in a devastator squad.
Heavy bolters are pretty crap, now that I think of it. only 3 shots each, of which 2 will actually hit (on average). That leaves a maximum of 2 dead enemies, which is not that useful against mobs of 30 Orks.
For the most versatility and cheapest price (it's free!), I vote the Missile Launcher. 99% of my Tactical Squads will have Missile Launchers, as its reliable anti-medium tank, anti-MEQ, and anti-horde, it doesn't cost any more points to take which allows me to concentrate on more models, and I typically have Drop Podding Meltaguns to take care of the bigger nasties. It's just too sweet of a deal to pass up, and I expect to see a lot of army lists with Missile Launchers.
I like heavy bolters. They are good at shooting at the sort of thing the tac squad should be firing at anyway and just add a little punch. Now that blasts are more dangerous I'd consider MLs and PCs too, but too much plasma isn't a good look. I actually consider the best possible tac squad to be heavy bolter and plasma gun.
No more NG spearmen, thanks! Now I need some pump-wagons!
I would go with the plasma cannon. For five points you can threaten practically anything in the game at decent range (but not av 14!). Missile launchers are good for the extra STR, but the ap loses out vs termies etc. Lascannons are a bit unwieldy and can be pointless weapon if you come up against hordes. Multimeltas are great but the range sucks so i would only use one in a drop pod. Heavy bolters are just not worth it.
As there seems to be more and more people getting marine armies, I have switched my army round to specifically kill SMs. My tac squads have Plasma cannon, Plasma gun, and a combi plasma on the sgt. Not a bad amount of ap2 weapons for 195 points.
