hey all. Quick questions about the conscripts, as I've done a quick search and can't seem to find the same question...
I know its possible for 50 conscipts to be counted as a single unit... at and least for the moment phase and they all move as one unit I believe. But what about shooting?
I know its probably redundant, as who expects conscripts to hit anything? But I thought its best to be safe. Can each of the ten man squads fire at different targets... I plan to equip them with flamers so they "might" kill something...
Or do all 50 men fire at the same target? As that sounds like a LOT of dice. Espically if its in rapid fire range!! I'd assume you just fire 10 men at a time, but I thought I'd just double check if they all have to shoot the same unit or not.
Each conscript platoon contains 2-5 squads of 10 conscripts each. Pretty much the same as a regular guardsman platoon minus the command squad. So all 5 squads should be able to move and shoot independently of one another.
Of course i stand to be corrected if I've overlooked something.
No, actually Conscripts are a "single unit of 20 - 50 men" therefore must shoot at the same target. Its in the grey box next to the conscript entry in the codex
Personally for that reason I wouldn't take more than the minimum size for the squad. Unless you want to scare the crap out of your opponent through shear numbers
Cheers for clearing it up
And yeah, I think the idea of a huge swarm of meatshields is pretty funny. Plus if I have to throw up to 100 dice (rapid fire) to attack a single target, its insane!
I imagine even termies would feel that....
I like the sound of the Conscripts though, they sound they could be quite useful
Ahh yeah i see now. I've never actually used conscripts myself.
I've never played with conscripts myself but let me tell you, even as a marine player it's a little intimidating to see 50 guys running at you. First thought is shoot them down, then you realize...wow that's a lot of bodies. Then you say ok I'll charge you and tie you up in Close Combat. Then...wow they put out a lot of attacks, enough to make my squad fall back. These aren't so bad if you have a flamer or two handy to take them out, or if you have a walker that's not being used and you can tie these guys up. But otherwise man watch out, a good guard player can really mess up your day with these guys. Especially good with a Commissar or a priest >=D

Nah as was stated, that big 50 man unit is one gigantic squad. I suppose the debate there would be if that large squad would be worth the output, as even though they are dirt cheap, the cost of that many adds up.
You know you're in IG player when you see a topic titled "Conscript Shooting" and you immediately assume it's about Commisars shooting Conscripts for trying to run away.
I think you need to spend more time on your floor.

current problem of conscripts: the new line of sight combined with cover save rules. and the new combat resolution leadership modifiers.
first one, it's hard to keep them in cover while still having an effective firing position with an adequate amount of guns.
second issue, though they can get in a good number of attacks from bodies, they'll still usually lose a lot more men. and since you take -1ld for each wound you lose by and they have bad initiative, they'll probably get chased down and slaughtered in that initial round of combat anyways.
the most effective use i've had for them is a unit of 30, with a payload of 3 missile launchers and 3 grenade launchers. the blast templates are scatter guns anyways so will hit almost as much as most other troops with them. a nearby hso w/ standard (or indy commissar for slightly less effect) keeps them in place.
with the amount of bodies in cover behind those guns, it's almost impossible to get rid of them without assaulting and chasing them down. making them a good firebase, and a good lure for enemy troops.
I assume he just shoots a random conscript and then assumes command... giving them ld 10 as normal.... I think!!
Quick question though. If I'm using the conscripts as a human shield.... to give my regular guys a 4+ cover save. And the cover save works... does that give any penalty to a conscript? As in theory one of them is catching a bullet for one of the more important guys!
