Been running the math of Dev squads vs. Sternguard and noticed a odd situation - a 10 man dev squad w/ 2 lascannons and 2 plasmacannons comes in only 10 points cheaper than 2 5man sternguard squads w/ the same load out. Change the plasmacannon for lascannons and the sternguard are 10 points cheaper. What do you think is the better option is?
I've been considering 10 Sternguard with 2 plasma cannons or lascannons and a Razorback. Combat squad them and you've got a mini-Devastator unit and the always good Sternguard riding in a Razorback. Their heavy weapons are cheap and they still have magic bullets if they need them.

I'm a fan of lascannon toting sterns who are also scoring.
This thread raises some good points on the subject. I still like devs for the free signum and being able to take a full 4 heavy weapons. Devs you'd probably want further back with the real heavy weapons raining death while Sternguard are more medium range where their rapid-fire goodies come into play and the 2 attacks are more useful.
They are my bulwark against the Terror. They are the Defenders of Humanity. They are my SPESS MAHREENS!
I don't think I'd ever would, but if I did ever give my sternguard a heavy weapon it would be plasma cannon and have them on a forward objective. That way the Kraken bolts would almost be at the same range.
But to me sternguard should only ever have their bolters or combi-bolters and maybe a plasmagun or heavy flamer
