After reading the new SM codex and it's changed fluff of a neophyte going from scout, to devastator, to assault, then finally to the honored position of tactical marine(due to troops only counting as scoring) Instead of scouts get to be tac marines until they find what they are good at and specialize.
Anyway my question is does anyone think that they will change Space wolf fluff for the scouts or any other normal unit like they did for tac squads.
I don't think Space Wolves Scouts would change, it's what makes them so different from other chapters (as if the Wolves themselves weren't different enough xD). Well I say I don't think they would, but who knows.. GW works in strange and sometimes retarded ways. -_-
Iron Swords 3rd Company - We are the swords which reap the bodies of our foes.
Train of thought will be terminating at.. edible murder weapons!
I don't think so... but Blood Angels used to have a similar Scout system to the 'Wolves, and they changed that in the online PDF.. but not many people knew that, and the SW thing is very widely known.
I don't think so, and I hope not.

The neophytes of a Space Wolves company are their Blood Claws, which can be made up from the lower WS and BS statistics of the Blood Claws.
Space Wolves Scouts have always been an Elites unit. Loners, highly-trained, as good as any marine, those are the Space Wolf Scouts.
Changing this all would make no sense, as it is integral to how the Space Wolves play that the Scouts are highly-skilled and that the Blood Claws fight like crap, but are just very eager.
I suppose that I should redefine my question. I am not only refering to scouts but also the long fangs and the assualt marines. The old SM devastators and assualt squads were highly experienced and specialized too, but now they are just part time positions.
I'm sorry to say this but I think that part of my problem with the new fluff changes and the reason I posted this thread was really about how GW marginalized some of the space marine squad types in the fluff not in the game. I'll admit right up front that I don't use every type of squad in my codex. I still see that each squad has it's own role and abillities, even if some are more effective then others. Something just bothers me about taking a unit and instead of saying that some people are good enough ot specialize into this, that everyone goes through this. Also the fact that all space marines go through training in the use of just about every weapon and tactic before they earn their power armor in most chapters. In my opinion GW just should have said that any space marine commander will refuse to hold ground with specialized units that are unsupported by other troops due to their vulnerabillity.
And again I'm sorry for ranting like this. I promise to try not to rant more.
DIY chapters can have their own fluff so I can have mine just use the old system of advancing right?
In your DIY Chapter, you can have people going from Scouts to Termies to Assault back to Scout to Devastator to Tactical to Landspeeder crew. So long as you've got decent fluff to back it up, you can do whatever the hell you want. (And even if you don't have any decent fluff.. it's your army, isn't it?).
But with Space Wolves, it's alot more well-defined than in other Chapters.
And argh! I have to go, so I'll finish this post later...

For the Space Wolves, the particular progression through the various units has always been a big part of their fluff. It is even the main reason Long Fangs are called "Long Fangs." I suppose Games Workshop could change that any time they want, but they could also change their main chapter color to blue, give them funny hats and make them all wear dresses.
As for the fluff in your own chapter, Wolf Lord Herby is exactly right. You can make the progression whatever your want.
