I have just bought my first dread, and am wondering what the best all-rounder weapon combo is. I am leaning towards Assault Cannon + CC + Heavy Flamer. This is also for the normal, plastic dread from GW - so please don't post about Ironclads or Furisios.
Some options I didn't include because they're just silly (like MM + ML).
I'm really liking the new Multi-Melta, DCCW with Storm Bolter.
I though I'd miss the extra shots the Assault Cannon provides but with the rending nerfing, I'm just using melta where in the past I never actually use it besides on attack bikes.
The MM is a nice cheap option, since I usually drop my dread down near enemy vehicles and try to bust them open. I also tend to give it a heavy flamer so he has something to deal with all those troops in cover when need be.
Before 5th, the ass cannon/CCW option was always my favourite, as I love ass cannons <3
Iron Swords 3rd Company - We are the swords which reap the bodies of our foes.
Train of thought will be terminating at.. edible murder weapons!
having play-tested over half of those combos, i have to admit that the plasma cannon/DCCW combo works the best for me.
armour ignoring blasts that can instant-kill some units a long way away from the dreadnought, hardly something i'd want to give up.
I prefer taking the DCCW as the primary purpose of the dreadnought is to survive in close combat against units that cannot harm it (or have a near-impossibly chance of harming it), so oblitering units with plasma cannon then assaulting is how i would use it =)
No unit stats, please -- Canew

Personaly my favorite combo is a twin linked heavy flamer + CCW with a heavy flamer, and a drop pod for good measure. Drop him in behind a big squad, burn and assault until theres nothing left. Nothing says "Fire magnet" quite like that.
Some might call me a fanatic.
On a more reasonable note, I think plasma cannon with the CCW would work well. Assault cannon doesn't have the same punch anymore... Multi Melta as said is a nice replacement.
I voted for the TL Autocannon with a ML, it seems like a reasonably cheap firesupport platform, once I convert the TL Autocannon I plan on fielding one with my BA.
DIY BA SC - Blood Hawks - 1250pts
I voted for assualt cannon.
I always want my dreaders to go after infantry then crash into CC and crush them.
I use the AC / DCCW + HFlamer mostly.
Haven't tried the MM yet but it sounds like an option especially if you shock your dready.
I have 3 SM Dreads and I tend to vary what I take depending on the opponent.
So far I have always taken a Dreadnought Close Combat Weapon, as far as I'm concerned you don't leave home without it. The heavy flamer upgrade on this is also a must as it's fantastic for thinning out squad numbers before an assault, and has been the bane of many a squad Orks and Eldar (Harlequins burn gooood).
As for the ranged weapon, this can vary hugely. I find the Assault Cannon was great for anti-infantry, it's not as good now but still a good choice as the strenght of it is quite good when you get that many shots, it can even do some serious damage to the rear armour of vehicles if you roll well.
The multi-melta is a nice addition but if you miss you're screwed. If you really want to kill armour I consider the TL Lascannon much better - but you pay the points for it.
I definitely fancy trying the Plasma Cannon / DCCW version as it does seem like a good deal, especially when overheating is no longer part of the equation!
I don't like the Autocannon in general as it seems like a jack of all trades, master of none. Unless you are facing lots of high T enemies with average saves the AP of it and the low number of shots make it not really that good IMO (unless it's being used for anti-air purposes (Space Marine Datasheet - "Watchtower" Anti-Air Dreadnought) of course).
To conlude though, my config of choice is still the AC and DCCW+HF. You have plenty of shots to seriously thin out squads, but you can still hurt the nastier troops and vehicles in an assault.
I have the old metal Assault Cannon and Storm Bolter and he has served me pretty well through 3 editions. Once he makes it into combat he misses with all his attacks, every time!
I got a new Dread with Multi Melta and gave him a heavy flamer to help out. He hasn't hit with the multi-melta yet in 2 games but he did flame a few marines and then killed one in combat. Aftyer which he swung and missed, a lot.
I do want a TL Autocannon dread with either a missile launcher or second Autocannon. Might convert one at some stage..
