Hey guys, been away for a while, kinda put the hobby aside and all for a while u know?
however ive decided that its time i got on with my Marine Company, lol
however, seeing as i havent played 40k with the 5th Ed rules, i was thinking if starting up a small 500-1000pt army with a bit of everything in it to get to grips with the new ruls etc
ive come across a small matter of Tac squads and weapon options... or lack of?
it mentions that a 10 man squad of marines can choose both a Special and Heavy weapon, but what about understrength squads? :s can i no longer take a 5/6 man squad with a flamer and stick them in a Razorback? or can they only have plain bolters?
i gathered you folks might be able to help me, so can any of u guys explain?
cheers in advance

You read it right, special and heavy weapons are only available to Tactical Squads numbering ten models, as the codex states. However, keep in mind that nothing is stopping you from running combat squads; grab a ten man squad, give them a heavy weapon and a special weapon as well as a Razorback. Run the special weapon combat squad (five men) in the Razorback while the heavy weapon combat squad sits back and fires away.
Your fears are fairly well founded! Sorry mate.
Best bet - get a hold of the codex and check up on all the little rules - the allowed armaments is only a part of the changes.
Although, if you still want to run small squads like that, there's always the option of giving the sergeant a combi bolter of some kind. Not as effective in the long term, although often with weapons such as meltaguns and flamers i've found I only tend to get one shot off anyways.

Also, you should google "garfield minus garfield". Awesome.
You can only give a Tac squad special/heavy weapons if it is a full strength squad.
This seems like a bad thing at first, but remember that you can combat squad them and split them down into 2 groups of 5, one special weapon in each. Heres my personal favorite setup.
10 Man Tactical squad, Flamer, Missle Launcher, Sergeant with a powerfist and Combi-Flamer.
Split it into 2 groups of 5. One group gets the missle launcher and stays back for fire support, the other gets the flamer and the sergeant.
So the missle launcher squad stays back and fires away, the group with a flamers and heavy flamers gets into a razorback to rush up to burn/bash something.
Sorry if I'm rambling, I'm sure you get the idea. it works with almost any combonation of weapons.
