After hearing just so many positive things about Sternguard, I bought a pack today.
And was sort of disappointed. 5 marines, with only one getting the option of two combi-weapons. I was hoping that there would be more room to move when equipping more than one member of the squad with a combi, but just looking at the models it looks like you'd have to really know what you're doing to be able to use the spare (or any other) combi weapon on the other models without completly botching it.
Has anyone else found this? For those with more than 1 combi-weapon in your squad, how did you do this?
The only real reason to buy the models is due to the fact that they are very good looking, and an excellent addition to a collection. Their unit options aren't fantastic, though, when compared to what you can do...
Best thing to do is to take bits from all of the plastic boxes and make your own Sternguard.
I suppose I'd have to visit a bitz shop and get all those fancy chest pieces and shoulderguard to make some ordinary marines look unique eh.
If you're not interested in spending loads on bits, grab a 10man tac box set and abuse the purity seals, scopes and tabards on 5 men till they look 'busy' then all you'll need are the weapon options (which you got in the sternguard box anyway!)
Let us know if you're having any issues =)
You are probably better off with the standard tactical squad box set and overloading 5 guys with extra detail and giving them a fancy paint job to make them stand out. However becuase you already have bought the sternguard box set maybe use those as veteran sergeants and that way you still get to use the models if the box set doesnt have the options you are looking for?
I recently bought a tactical squad just so I could use up all my weapons options (all the extra plasma/meltaguns, a couple of ML's I bought as bits to get a 4 man ML dev squad ), so I'd have to buy yet another tactical squad to kit out 5 of them...this is getting to be a ridiculous amount of painting, and I already have so much stuff unpainted I'll probably buy the commander box to get some more combi weaps and some neat armour.
Not enough hours in a day ftl.
edit: CR, that was a great idea (the 10 man tact), I tried to rep you for it but it told me I need to spread the love before giving more to you, haha.

I was thinking about sternguard and decided if I want any i'll just6 get the DA pack with all the veteran looking robed marines, then all i'd have to do is convert the combi weapons and shave off the DA symbols.
IG Best Gen 1st overall of 10 DE 4th overall of 6
Eldar 3rd Overall/Best General of 26--2nd Overall/Best General of 7--1st Overall/Best General of 11
Just ordered some DA veterans myself to convert into a squad of Sternguard. Can't wait till they get in ( ^^)v
As for the Sternguards themselves, if anything I'd get some of the models because they're absolutely sexy, and would do well as sergeants if anything. Especially the bolter/powerfist one, my favourite. xD
