hiya, i am new to wh40k and am hoping to play my friend for my first proper match in the near future. I was wondering if anyone could give me any main pointers for defeating the mechanical menaces.
oh forgot to mention, it will be a 1000pt battle and he enjoys his lord with res orb and usually takes destroyers.
The best thing to do against necrons is focus fire. The rule that lets him stand his guys up on the next turn only works if their is another of the same type nearby.
That means it is a lot better to kill all three destroyers that are grouped together than just one. Try to put all of your ranged attacks into the same place.
The res orb can be powerful, but he still has to make the roll to get back up. If you can, kill him early so that even if he does get back up, he will only have 1 wound left.
Moral can work well against necrons as well. They all have leadership 10, but if you can win a close combat by a bunch of wounds than you have a nice chance of overrunning them.
Main point is: Necrons aren't that hard for SMurffs to handle. Just be sure to prioritize your targets, and don't split up your fire.
On top of the above suggestions, which are all true, is an obvious one:
CC is your friend. Power weapons and power fists eat Necrons alive. I know it's pretty obvious, but I just gotta say it because I have so much fun throwing marines into CC with Necrons after exchanging fire for a few turns... Gotta love that Initiative of... well, really low, I dont think I'm allowed to post it...
A vindicator never hurt either. Chaplains work wonders against them in CC, as do lightning claw termies. Kousona is right about the focus fire, try to nail an entire squad at a time. If he isn't using a lot of warriors, try to phase him by killing what warriors he has.
if you can could you post a list of your army and his if you can, we can help you with tacta of the best way to defeat hem .
a very good site to look at for Necron tactca is The Ctan Support Group - Index we will help you with the best ways to defeat Necrons, so you win 1 battle , the legion will win the war
Another missed point is phase out. reduce his army strength to below 25% and he phases out. Its a wonderful tactic. So first up tally up the total number of Necron models on the board and work out how many must be dead before phase out then focus on those large squads of warriros and anything else like them, such as scaram swarms and imortals, until he phases out.
Using this technique means you can ignore Tomb Spyders, Monoliths and C'tan and focus totally on killing units on foot. Taking down the Lord might be an advantage early on, but if it isnt dead come turn 3, dont focus on it and just get the troops down.
My brother plays Necron, and hes very very efficient at getting into rapid-fire range early on. I advise that if you get into rapid fire range of a Necron squad, you assault instead of fire those extra bolter rounds as those Necron guns are better than ours yet our models almost always attack first in close combat =)
Let us know how you get on =)
thanks very much for all your helpful pointers.
he tends to use a lord with destroyer body, res orb and phylactery.
usually 3 destroyers
and the rest is warriors
a captain which i yet to decide wargear so any ideas would help
chaplain in term armor
2 tact squads missile launchers and flamers
dreadnaught with multimelta/lascannon again cant decide which
as for the rest any ideas would be great
oh another question if anyone can answer it for me.
the we'll be back roll says about being within distance of another model of same type. does this include the others that are down or jus the ones that are still standing.
*** Warning, large post ahead! ***
All you have to take with you is anti-troop weapons and you're laughing, though on the other hand the points he could have wasted on a 'lith or C'tan would have reduced the number of warriors on the board making it harder for phase-out...
I reckon that's around 40 warriors he'll be bringing, totalling almost 50 models on the board, so aim to kill 35 to 37 and you'll phase him out.
For additions to your current line up, grab some devistators with plasma cannons or missile launchers to help take down the enemy and add the termie squad i mentioned before.
Failing that, an extra tac squad similar to the two you already have would not go wrong along with another dreadnought with DCCW/assault cannon.
