Hello all. I was wondering, whats everyones experience with non-GK armies, only using Storm Troops for troops?
Hey, I have never tried that kind of army but I think it will work. u may want to ask that question in the imperial Guard part as from memory they can have a storm trooper army
i played a few games of combat patrol with just stomies and an inquisitor which was a fairly lethal combination against my tau.
Main problem you'd have would be buying that many models, you'd be looking at 40+ storm troopers in 1k points if they were all in rhinos and there are no plastic models available. That and all your models would look really similar as there's no options to pose the models/add war gear.
less hate more kittens
Personally, I like the idea. Oddly enough, fluff wise, I don't like the idea of Grey Knights in Power Armour, as (to my knowledge) they didn't really come up in the canon (I don't know if that has changed). An army led by a Grand Master, 4 - 7Terminators (although you said non GKs) and the rest made up of Inquisitors, Stormtroopers, assassins etc seems like a really good army story wise as it is far more realistic to the fluff - since GKs only really gather for war every century or so.
Practically speaking, eadipus has got it right. If you were serious about this army, I'd consider using Cadian Shock Troops as storm troopers (from a purely practical point of view). It would be considerably cheaper, and you could also pose them. If you wanted to customise them, there's a website called pig iron productions that makes awesome heads for reasonable prices (they're based in the UK, and do ship internationally) - it would give them a far more storm troopery look.
Storm Trooper armies can be really nasty in Combat Patrol. If you want to win, just take 4 squads of stormtroopers with 2 plasma guns and a couple of rhinos / chimeras. Nasty.

Thanks for the reply's. I was thinking about an army like this because I heard that they might be coming out with plastic storm troopers.
The only problem I can see is that you don't get very many options if you're not using Grey Knights. You get one HQ choice (Inquisitor), one Troops choice (IST), three Elites (Temple Assasin, DCA, Daemonhost), no Fast Attack, and only an Orbital Strike for Heavy Support. Seems like kind of a boring force to play with or against long-term, to me at least. If you like using stormtroopers, you might consider using Imperial Guard, as they have some doctrines that let you have an army that's almost entirely made up of storm troopers, but you get all sorts of interesting vehicle options as well.
I dunno, it's up to you, of course. You could probably make an all-IST army competitive, particularly against power-armored foes (due to your ability to spam plasma), but I suspect you'd have more fun, more variety, and a more flexible force if you used Imperial Guard instead.
Just my two cents, of course =).
Political language is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.
If you're intruiged by doctors who are also ninjas, then this is the webcomic for you!
I've got to agree with Hasten here. I'm not sure DH or WH is necesarially what you want to use as your parent list for an all Stormtrooper army. WH has a few more options as far as non-SoB units, with the Ecclesiarchy crazies (Arco-flagellents, zealots, Penitent Engines) but they require a priest to use.
I'd look into IG. right now, with Doctrines, you can have a pretty decent ST list with Grenadiers doctrine, and you get IG Heavy choices, which are very nice. If you want an Inquisitor, take him as an Ally, and get a Land Raider if you want.
When the new IG codex comes out, I'm betting there will be a Stormtrooper variant list available. otherwise, you'll see some ST IG guys sporting =I= colors for a little while. rumor has it that the new IG 'dex will have an Inq. as a HQ choice...
It's even possible to do a 3Russ, 2LandRaider list, if you want. (if I had the models, I prob would, just to try to outcheese the cheesemonkeys)
I usually go GK heavy with an inquisitor/assassin and two squads of stormies for cannon-fodder. Once I tried a 1,000 point game against SM with a mounted IG squads and no GKs. Got my rear-end handed to me.
But since then I was wondering - did I lose so badly because I'm use to GK walking up to someone and destroying them or did I lose because the stormies are over-priced IG?
I don't think a pure stormie army is feasible because, as Hasten said, there's not a bunch of options. However, stormies backed up with a couple of anti-armor IG squads and a Leman Russ would throw you're opponent off if they were expecting a sit-back-and-shoot IG army.
With all of that said, in almost every 2k point game I played with my cannon-fodder stormies against SM, they have always managed to take down one terminator. Not two, always only one. And then they abruptly die. But a glory-hound guard taking down a termie always irks my opponent.
I don't use an all storm trooper army, but they are my base troops for all of my DH games. I use 20 ST with 2 Plasma guns each sittin back and shooting anything comming into rang, while two squads of 5 man STs are in rhinos with a seargent having a teleport homer for deep striking termies and fast attack GK's.
I've seen a WH IST list online awhile back. It was, more specifically, Arbites. I think the way to approach an all IST list would be as a mechanized force of Chimeras and Rhinos with a LR or two (with inquisitors). If you use WH as the parent you could also use Exorcists, since they do not require SOB to be present. Then I'd think you'd have a pretty solid force.
As for models, I use two squads of 10 ISTs in Rhinos in my DH army with plasma guns (I love plasma guns). I use the Kasrkin models for squad Alpha and the classic storm troopers for squad Bravo.
