hey all, I wanted to talk about close combat termies. So I've always had a soft spot for lightning claw terminators, just because they look wicked. But it seems to me with the upgraded storm shields that they're completely out classed. Which of you still use them, why, and in what roles are they superior?
In both my armies of SM, I have never used Lightning Claws as it just isnt the same. While you get the extra attack now adays for them, the 3+ invul on the SS, S8 hits on the TH outweigh the re-rolling failed to wounds. Plus, having that amazing invul allows for a really expensive 5 man unit to last longer in the game, making them very much worth taking now.
TH and SS is the way to go!

Lightning Claws are still a fantastic weapon option for Terminators, most especially against infantry heavy armies and armies that do not have very many low AP weapons (I'm thinking Tau, Necrons, Kroot Mercs, Tyranids focusing on swarm tactics, Orks). They shine against masses of infantry where that extra attack and reroll will really make a difference in thinning up the enemy before they get attacked back.
The Thunder Hammer/Storm Shield Terminators are amazing when you need a tough as nails unit to smash into something big and nasty. Throw them at HQs, Monstrous Creatures, other Terminators, and various other big baddies. Their invulnerable save only kicks in when their armour save is negated, and that only happens against elite units and big bads or against AP2 or better weaponry, which is of abundance in Imperial armies but lacking in the armies I mentioned above.
I would far prefer a unit of LC Terminators facing a mob of Orks than I would the Thunder Hammer/Storm Shield, for the simple fact that I'd get to attack first and hopefully halt some of the damage incoming. With the Thunder Hammer, I'd have to pray that the multitude of attacks coming in before my guys can strike won't take out the unit.
Each weapon has its utilities; in the previous edition, the Thunder Hammer/Storm Shield combination was a bit lacking and you'd only see one or two at most in any squad. Now that's changed, and it's a viable all-or-none sort of item, but I don't think it replaces the Lightning Claws at all.
Why not have both in a squad? With 5th edition I have found its good to have a mix of both Thammper and Lclaw termies, that way you can still have a few storm shield saves when you need them and then use the Lclaws for larger squads that your termies would charge.
The best way I have found just a Lclaw squad being the most effective is in a LR crusader with a chaplain in termie armor. That way you can pick out the targets to charget that will make your termies the most effective and rerolling hits and wounds is just plain sick.
The other reason I have found to use LC over TH+SS is if your a DA player. Our SS is only 4+ instead of the new 3+. Gives LC that edge in CC I think.
