Hey guys I am an IG player and I would like to use an inquisitor lord as my leader, but I am unsure what war gear or psychic power or henchmen I should use. My plan is to use the inquisitor lord as a counter attack model with the first line as normal guardmen. Normal I am normal vs one of the chapters of SM. Could some one suggest some war gear I should use?
I'd recommend against using an Inquisitor Lord as a close combat unit due to his measly human stats, but if you want to for either aesthetic or fluff reasons, it's totally fine.
When taking an Inquisitor Lord, you'll discover that what makes the Lord powerful is not what gear he can take, but what he can take in his retinue.
You'll probably want to take an ]I[ Lord with a Thunder Hammer/Daemon Hammer and three acolytes with storm shields or power weapons and three powerfist warriors, taking the other henchmen as appropriate. Toss an Icon of the Just and Terminator armor if you think he really needs it. Give him holocaust and hammer hand as well for horde killing ability and the ability to strike at initiative if you need it. Tooled up for close combat against daemons, an DH ]I[ is powerful, tooled up for any other sort of combat and he's mediocre at best. Mount him in a Land Raider and you've got a pretty angry threat. Or just keep him on foot as you intended.
Thus, to summarize: ]I[ Lord with Hammer or force weapon, Icon of the Just, maybe Terminator Armor and maybe hammer hand or holocaust, Three acolytes with Stormshields or power weapons, Three powerfist warriors, and whoever else you want to act as ablative wounds.
In my opinion though the Daemon Hunter Inquisitor isn't all that great in terms of close combat potential compared to a Witch Hunters Inquisitor.
A Witch Hunters CC Inquisitor will consist of the following: ]I[ with an Eviscerator or Force Weapon, three Crusaders (Guys with power weapons AND 4+ invul saves) and three acolytes with man catchers( -1 attack to opponents) or power weapons if you're alright with spending a fortune on the squad. Add in a pair of Sister Hospitallers to pump you up with adrenline (Ignores the first failed save on the Inquisitor, if two are in the squad that would can be ignored, even if it does cause instant death or is a power weapon). Give him the psychic power "His Will be Done" to double the amount of wounds he caused for purposes of deciding who won combat.
Thus, to summarize: ]I[ Lord with Eviscerator or force weapon with a Rosarius and His Will Be Done , Three crusaders or Powerfist warriors, Three mancatcher or power weapon equipped acolytes, Two sisters hospitaller and whatever else you want as ablative wounds.
As you can see, the Witch Hunters Inquisitor is superior in terms of close combat compared to the Daemon Hunters not due to his load out, but because of the retinue he can take which is more CC oriented. The DH Inquisitor really leans towards shooting, since he can take a psycannon and mystics. In addition, Holocaust is not nearly as useful as His Will Be Done, as he could kill his own retinue when using Holocaust.
Both are very expensive for what they do, and you may find yourself suddenly short on points, as the squad will probably run northwards of 200 points. Both are very fragile as well, as the best most squad members will get is 4+, 3+ on acolytes and 4+ invuls every other way. A Witch Hunters squad is somewhat more surviavble thanks to the Hospitallers, but not by much, as it's still just a squad of humans, and thus most weapons will wound you on 3s or 2s.
At that point value I'd just take a squad of PAGK or even a BC with terminator retinue. But, if you're playing for awesome rather than effectiveness, then go for it. Since, as we all know, you can't put a price on AWESOME.
You may end up wanting to bring an assassin as well, to help boost your combat performance, such as an eversor or death cults.
But, whatever floats your boat man.
Sayomi's recommendations are very good ones. if you want a CC =I=, go with the WH, because of what his retinue can do.
Inquisitors aren't great return on investment as far as CC goes. for Shooting, that's a different story.
if you want CC, I'd go with a GK BC in Termie armor, and give him a Psycannon while you're at it. (I don't think he loses attacks because of the Psycannon, and who couldn't use the Str6 assault/heavy weapon?) If you put some regular PAGK's with him, you can keep him affordable, and much better at shooting and assult than the Inquisitor.
you can always call him an Inquisitor for fluff reasons, and he'd be better in CC than a real Inquisitor Lord.
I don't agree assault is the best way for a Inquisitor/lord.
A good/fun counter attack I could suggest would be.
Inquisitor/Inquisitor Lord: Incinerator, Hammerhand (Also consider Consecrated scrolls and Holocaust)
The Warrior x3: Flamer (3)
Transport Vehicle: Rhino, Extra armour, Smoke Launchers.
Ok so your gettin 4 Flame templates which will all hit the same number of models (5th edition rules) So your looking at a good assault and counter attack squad.
About 180+pts depending on Inquisitor/Lord
I might write like a ork but i fight like a poet.
Some one tell me they have ever seen a nightbringer die from a Nemesis Force Weapon.
