I'm starting up an Imperial Guard regiment and I need some ideas for the models.
Im gonna keep it codex for now, but I want it to shape up to look something like this...
I only want the Doctrines in the 1500+ games, and honestly, I probably won't even use them there. Gonna end up being a giant gunline until I throw doctrines into the mix.
- Light infantry
- Special Weapons
- and either Sharpshooters, Die hards, or Hardened Fighters
The fluff is along the lines of them being light infantry that are masters of using any kind of cover to their advantage (cameleoline and light infantry). The regiment trains veterans, lots of them (veterans, duh?). I like snipers (special weapons squads). And you can use your imagination to justify the last one (experts at firing flashlights, firmly brainwash- erm, trained; or good at clearing cover of enemies)
Flamers feature heavily in this army, as do Heavy Bolters and Missle Launchers.
I was thinking Catachans at first, then I thought Cadians with respirators, then I thought "maybe, just maybe I can get enough Cadian SGT or Catachan heads and put them on Cadian bodies" or theres the possibility of swapping Cadian legs for Catachan legs (big difference).
Throw me ideas guys =) Thanks in advance!
Hmm, kind of sounds like the Tanith Ghosts, but anyways, theres a cool conversion on display at my GW store were they have:
they also have SM Scout Sniper night vision, they look so cool, i was thinking of making a platoon of them for my army.
We who have seen war will never stop seeing it....In the silence of the night, we will always hear the screams....
I also am growing a undead IG army, by bying spare skeletal sprues/leftovers (Tomb kings army players are best). Put arms/heads/some legs on cadian torso's (with some zombie parts here and there and you have yourself some exellent conversions (I stress only the OLD skeletal sprues work)
I was this "." close to buying a load of plastic farm animals and convertting them onto cadian bodies, for my "Animal farm" army. Imagine a squad of sheep headed guardsmen. Officers = sheepdogs. For elites you could diverse to exotic animals / dinosaurs. The hardened vet velociraptor squad. The rhino stormtrooper squad. The oxen ogryn squad. Haybales and oat sacks for objectives.
You could go really nuts and convert a large cow into a "cow-mera" with a udder slung heavy bolter, bell mounted multilaser, and seats on the back (like elephant rides)
Or, do a sci-fi/tv army. Stormtroopers for stormtroopers (marines and cadians combine to make them well). Maybe the A-team as a command squad (in black rhino with red stripe). Starship troopers for troopers, AT-STs for sentinals, the "predator" squad for hardened vets. It's a good excuse to watch loads of films to get ideas for your squad. Oh, and Darth Vader with lightsaber for an allied grey knight.
Why stop there? Get boxes of gobbos and do a grot IG army. (Been done elsewhere and looks great.
Get some empire militia boxes for a peasants revolt army.
Or, do a "Hello Kitty" space marine army (Yes, it's out there, in full pink (with extra glitter) glory)
A Tau Transformers Army (There too)
A Tyranid "Aliens" army (with greenstuff and lost of gloss varnish. I played him.)
The world is your oyster.
bah. must work now.

If your ready to throw in a lot of cash then check out forge world. The cadian upgrade pack and hard vet upgrade pack are very cool (althought a rough experience if you've never handled there resin models...).
Imperial Guard: 3000 pts
Chaos Daemons: 1000 pts
I have decided that I am going to use Catachans as my base, but I don't know what to throw in the mix to change it up... I'm thinking cadian arms and lasguns, I'll just get the bits online somewhere =/ Thanks for the idea, keep 'em coming =D
My company is Cadian but with a box of catachans thrown in the mix, most of the are in full uniform but others look like they have lost/ discarded their kit or are wearing shell jackets, vests ect ect.. if you look at clips of soldiers fighting in Afghanistan, Iraq, Vietnam oor of older pictures of soldiers from older wars they very rarely all look exactly the same.. some swap kit with allies, others take upgrade and replace bits from dead allies and enemies, some have been ill equipped for their environment and thus had to aquire their own supplies. As a campaign wears on and supplies are stretched unifroms fall apart and a soldier wears what he can, others find their kit impratical or uncomfortable (too hot, no use anyway, restricts movement, breaks to easily) and ditch it when they get chance.
My army is painted in field grey uniforms to suit fighting in Urban environments and temperate climates, however here and their a soldier has a pair of green combats, carrying a garish red rifle, dressed in a ratskin pelt (hes a native scout), missing his bayonet pouch, is fighting shirtless, in a vest.. the torso you get with the catachand that has the sleevless jacket goes well with Cadian arms... so the two kits work well. Just swapping a few heads here and there looks really good, on privates and squad leaders. Ive alos thrown in SM Scout heads for a few squaddies, and have used the FW veterans kits, House Escher have a couple of ladies that blend in quite well as female troopers, though you have to be hope you get the right ones. If youve got the whole unit supurbly attired it looks a little fresh and green. If their kit is a little mismatched, battered and looted they look like vets.
There's a company called Pig Iron Productions that makes various GW-sized bits & figures. Among other things, you can get sprues of gas-masked heads from them. Worth a try.

That is awesome! I think I'm gonna keep it at a ratio of 4:1 of Catachan boxes to Cadian boxes, and I'll throw some FW upgrades into the mix. Whats this talk about resin being tricky? Will it be THAT big of a deal if I'm converting only a few things?
THANKS SO MUCH GUYS! I APPRECIATE IT =D
Pig iron are good, but i can't see them working on catchans.
On catchans mixing some chaos maurauders in works well - you can probably find half a box or bits on ebay (I really like the bearded and bald head with a pierced ear)
What you could do is do one platoon catchans and one platoon cadian.
I am sulky you didn't decide to do a converted animal IG army. boo.
I got it, mostly Catachans, some Cadian arms where they will fit right, and I'll grab a set of the pig iron kolony rebels heads to sprinkle in. And if it doesn't work, I'll just put them on something else.
But theres always the possibility of keeping it codex guard, and using a mixture of models to represent combined forces, seems to happen in the books enough right?
