Hey all, so I was flipping through my IG codex last night and my eyes came to rest upon those wonderful convicts that you take with the suicide mission special character, the one with Lt. Kage.
So my thought was, for a little under a thousand points you could take this special character, Kage, 20 convict psykers. five sanctioned psykers, and your mandatory Command platoon, and 2 Troops.
Plus you could take some Gray Knight Terminators or inquisitors for those elite spots to bring you a little higher, and still have some room for armour in normal point games (1500-2000 ). I think this would be a wicked fun army to play, and I think it would throw someone completely off their game.
"How many psykers did you say you have?"
"1, 2, 3... twenty six"
"This is going to be a very long night"
So what do you lads have to say about this? Personally I suspect it would be a joke army, but do any of you think it would be workable?
If you're OK with Grey Knights then why not add an Inquisitor Lord and a Culexus Assassin? He gets one shot of his animus speculum for every psyker within a certain distance...
Shaeffer (and Kage) are fun, and very usefull. However, they are restricted to only a additional role in Guard armies.
You do get to ignore the HQ officer requirement in a all last chancers list, however if you take a tank then it stops being a last chancer army. You are also limited to 5 sub units in your last chancers, which is a shame.
Competitively, they're almost double the cost of a guardsman (for a extra attack, one higher BS, frag & krak, choice of equipment, deep strike and/or infiltrate and automatic passing of LD tests), and equipping them is upgrading to a specialist, which is expensive.
They do however have uses. a 26 point deep striking melta gun, with BS4 is good (or demo charge) and a two man team infiltrating with lascannon is great. Having shaeffer and kage on their own in sub units can help, and when you join a unit they keep the automatic passing of LD tests, so that conscript tar pit is a possibility with them attached - especially as you pass the LD test and don't take extra hits. (and kage has poor equipment, but 2 wounds and a invun save helps his longevity)
The psykers? they'd be better if the IG psychic powers were even halfway decent. unfortunately, they're not.
I love my last chancers. They're beautifully converted and i have a good history with them. I have a horid suspicion they're not going to cut into the next codex (especially with the armory disappearing - they just wouldn't be any use)
P.S. there's a large thread on them somewhere

And Crunchy, where does it say that you can't have tanks and such in an army that includes Shaeffer? I thought he was just a SC you add to your force? Plus you could not have 26 melta guns, you can only take a maximum of 20 last chancers.

he said a 26 point meltagun as that's what it comes out to after the upgrades. It would definitely be a joke fluff army, I don't think it could ever be competitive in a tourny style game. Although it could be fun with that ambush mission in the back of the book, a bunch of last chancer psykers ambushing a column would be sweet. or that lunar mission where the last chancers have to get some guy to a landing pad.
Most Notable Achievements:
Killed a Revenant Titan in one shot.
Killed 900 pts worth of Blood Angels in 2 turns while only loosing 4 pts.
I've thought about doing this, with Shaefer, Kage, and 20 Psykers, then add in an Inquisitor Lord, and the Culexus asassin, then take 2 squads of GK's. since everything's fearless because of Shaefer, and the GK's fearless, and the Inq. fearless... you've got 23 psykers that can all run close to the Culexus to pump up his Braingun.
so potentially, he could become a assult 25 ap1 demon of destruction.
admittedly, he's a big 1 trick pony, and would be scary, but mostly for a laugh. until he ate an expensive, uber HQ unit for lunch.
but he's very dead once the psykers start getting picked off.
