Have been out of the 40k world a time now, so I'm a bit un-updated. What I've heard is that in the 4th we will suffer alot because we can't screen our command squads and heavy weapon squads with regular infantry. Before I ended my 40k-life the last time I was beginning to build a IG army, have only painted like 3 guardsmen this far. What I've heard the only sucess one can have with the IG is with either with horde or mechanized, and since I'm not a speed painter, I'm going for the mechanized choice. Don't misunderstand me and think I'm a powergamer, 'cause I'm not, but I don't have a lot of experience but still want to play with the guard. I know the rules in theory, but since ther're soon going to be changed I'm going to focus on just painting until the new rulebook is out and then re-learn them.
What I want is to get som help with building a fun and somewhat good army. Don't need to win all the time, but at least have a fair chance to win against most armies.
The things I know i want to include is:
- A demolisher and a battletank. Seems like a nice core.
- A hellhound, cause it's so cool, and would look nice in a mechanized army.
- One sentinell, to be somewhat of the only scout, a bit more character that war. "The Lone Ranger" or something like that.
- Two 5-man Roughrider units with lances. They are going to be converted into bikes, probably buying some of my ork-playing friend and work something out of that. The lances are going to be represented by making a gun or something that is being shot into the target squad before they charge. (Same rules as the lances, only explained in a different way) You thing that would work?
The rest of the army is a bit of a blur. Maybe a stormtrooper squad or something else that is colorful.
Well, what I need is basicly tips on what units to use and maybe some equipment and such. And the second thing is tactics, I don't have any idea how to use a mechanized army, I've only borrowed a normal stand-and-shoot army before.
Cheers! / Oscar
Well, what really screws the whole mechanized army now is that the new rules state that a dedicated transport vehicle can no longer claim a table quarter. This means that the 10 chimeras in your army will be able to provide fire support and tank shock capabilities, but that's about it.
they can still claim table quarters, as long as the squad is above 50% strength.
For Rough Riders I'd recomend taking a look at Warmachine and specifically the Khador Iron Fangs, they're a unit of armour soldier armed with blasting pikes to take down enemy armour, and they look pretty cool.
If one could convert them to fit on a bike of some sort you'd have an interesting Rough Rider squad.
But one thing to look at with Mechanized is the Leman Russ Exterminator, it can deal out a good number of shots and does well against swarms, if you slap a pintle mounted Heavy Stubber on it you get a veritable swarm of shots coming from one tank, so if you know your going against swarm armies or lightly armoured groups use the Exterminator to pound on them a bit.
i like the feel of the exterminator, but in the end i'd definatly go with a basic Russ. and exterminator (hull HB, HB sponsons, pintle Hstub) will give you 14 shots on the move and will run you 147 points. however, a basic Russ with hull HB and HB sponsons will run you 155 points and give you 9 shots on the move or 1 BC shot. now personally i'd rather have one BC shot than 14 HB,AC,HS shots. and since the LRBT only costs 8 points more, imho it's a much sounder and more well rounded investment. i mean, both the LRBT and the exterminator can deal with lightly armored infantry, but which would deal better with power armor infantry???
