At present im a little stuck between the two, i already have two minimum storm trooper squads which will hopefully be bulked out by x-mas, and i have a couple of inquisitors, both with power swords an bolters, this part of the army ahs been used and tested but im unsure wherther to swing towards grey knights/daemonhosts with the daemonhunters or go sisters and witchhunters, what are the relative pro's and cons of each, im looking for a semi competetive small force that i haev the possibility to add to my space marine force or field on its own in small games? does anyone haev any suggestions for me?
thanks in advance
the general consensus is that stormtroopers are not worth it compared to reg sisters as the points difference is minor. compared to grey knights they are cheaper so I think going with that I would probably pick daemon hunters. Plus the reitnue they get in that book with the shoot any DS unit within 4d6 is nice.
Daemon Hunters rock, anyways. I would say DH.
When I play those little 400 point patrol games (whatever they're called) I go for an HQ inquisitor witha psycannon, two sages, and one gun servitor with plasma cannon. Put them in a chimera, and just sit shooting. You get a multi laser, a psycannon, a heavy bolter, and a plasma cannon, all BS 4 with one re-roll to hit inside of armor. Then I take a second chimera, put an IST squad in it with two plasma guns, and have them drive a little closer and shoot (unless the enemy is CC, then you just wait). Everything is in armor, you can usually steer to just show enemies your AV 12 front (they don't have many units in 400 point games), and just chill.
If you use this in a larger scale game make the HQ inq. into an elite inq. And make your HQ a GKGM in a land raider, beautiful.
In the above I mention patrol games, they're called Combat Patrol.
It really depends on what kind of army you want to play. Grey knights are a CC oriented army with their nemesis force weapons, but they are extremely expensive in points, so you'll have a much smaller force. Unfortunately with the new Daemon and CSM codices most of the GK powers aren't effective anymore, though I've heard there is one power that can be pretty cheap against daemons. GK inquisitors are a bit better off since they have a few people you can add tot heir retinues that allow you to shoot at deep strikers and a couple very useful weapon options.
Sisters are a mid-short range shooting army that's weak in CC. Most people field sisters as a mechanized army so they can get in and shoot at short range. Sisters have the faith special rule that gives them powers like AP1 on wounding rolls of 6 or invulnerable saves. Whitch hunter inquisitors are generally fielded as a firebase support, though some say that DH firebase inquisitors are slightly better because of the psycannon and mystic.
Stormtroopers aren't really good in either army IMHO. As mentioned above, they're only slightly less expensive than sisters, and much less effective. If you want a competitive stormtrooper army, go IG with the grenadiers doctrine and take an inquisitor as an ally...then you get to field Leman Russes! Both WH and DH are severely limited in anti-tank (exorcist excluded here) so why limit yourself if you're not going to take sisters or GK? Still if you want to be fluffy and have a stormy inq army, go for it.
There you have it: I hope that helps you make your decision...and remember...the inquisition is watching you!
It's obvious that Asharoth does not play a grey knight army, they are not CC oriented, sure they are decent in close combat against shooting troops, like regular tac squads, but any type or terminators, mega nobs, CC horde, or CC specialists of any sort, trump them, having a 25 point model with a storm bolter, aegis, and shrouding, they're a great shooting army. The GK termies are the only CC troops they REALLY have.
Anyway, I stand corrected. From what I gather, you're saying GK are a more balanced army?My experience with the grey knights is indeed limited to taking a terminator squad or two for some CC punch in my WH army, so that'ts really where I get my experience from. I guess I should have said that GK are MORE CC oriented. A stock GK still has the S6 cc wepon, and WS5. Against a balanced enemy (eg. a space marine) a GK would win out more often than not. Seriously though, are you REALLY going to charge headlong into a CC horde, or CC specialized troops? I don't even think specialized CC troops do that to each other without some softening up first.
