I've been playing fantasy for a few years now and me and my friends are trying our hands at 40k, Tyranids space marines and Necrons are the opposition but I'm not to worried about beating them as much as I am figuring out how to make my IG list work!
I recently purchased/inherited a few models and I really need some help putting this into a legal army..this is my troop selection
2 boxes of cadians ( no idea how i should build them like what special weapons and such)
1 box of karskin ( heavy infantry guys)
3 blisters of meltagun/plasma guns
2 blisters of commander leader types ( they have handweapons and pistols)
leamon russ battle tank
lots of catachans
ratling snipers and i think thats it
now my IG book says to make a force I need an HQ, and two troops choices so please tell me if this setup will work
HQ-Commander w two melta guns and two plasma guns
troop choice - Commander with a melta gun and a plasma gun and two standard ig
troops, then two teams of ten cadians
troop choice 2 - identical to the first
like I said im not really worried about what I have and how efffective it is yet, I just want to get something thats legal on the field and learn how to make an imperial guard force because I really am lost, thanks in advance !
That's completely legal, and you seem to have grasped the IG platoon structure fairly well.
FABRICATI DIEM, PVNC
You've got the basic structure down. What you can do is take what you have as Base Legal and play a few games with just that, as I'm sure your friends are in the same boat as you with their armies. Play a few games with just your base and then add in another option like the Storm Troopers or the Leman Russ. Add as you play so you can find the strengths/weaknesses of each unit and at the same time slowly building up what you have to a larger point force that you know how to play.

For a new player, you sure got it down. It took me few months to realise that 1 squad of guardsmen isn't enough for a troop choice and that's just for the troop choices.
Imperial Guard: 3000 pts
Chaos Daemons: 1000 pts
Any officer unit you give a plasma weapon to, put a medic in that unit.. will help you with those pesky gets hot rolls, not to mention when you're getting shot at. Everyone else has alraedy congradulated you on reading your codex, hooray common sense, so you don't need my smoke. Learn to manuever your Leman properly and understand it's not an assault vehicle... hide the damn thing and pick off people at range.
Welcome to the Imperial Guard son, now go get stuck in.
lol yea he seemed to grasp the platoon stucture very well, im suprised even, because the amount of threads about how the ig platoon works is hillarious, most people have no idea how it works XD
but i would use grenade launchers and flamers because plasma is not as good due to cover
but anyway Jeremiah L. Welcome to the imperial guard, hope you last longer than the last general, his death was rather mortifying! hope you enjoy your stay!

Thanks guys. 1000 point list soon i guess.
When i first started playing IG i was so confuse i though the point value of 1 squad was actually the point value of the whole entire platoon, so 60 point platoons FTW. But i went to my local GW and learned what to do.
