So, because we are still waiting for Cadaver Junkie, who is obviously very busy, I have decided to start the last Topic of the Week before Christmas. This weeks topic is: Heavy Weapons Platoons.
The only heavy support FOC choice for an all infantry army, are they worth their points? Or is the horrible 6 man squad just too shocking to be even mentioned? Or maybe you're just a treadhead lover?
Discuss, and have a merry Christmas and a happy new year!
Father Mulcahy: Just as the Lord said to Noah, "Everything in pairs."
Pierce Hawkeye: Of course the Lord was holding three aces at the time.
Thanks sarg for taking over while cadaver wasn't continuing the topic of the week, i'd considered doing this myself but decided against it.
I like the idea of heavy weapons platoons but those tanks are just so tempting. In apocalypse i'd want to have a couple for heavy weapons support. I used to think about an all infantry list with a few heavy weapons platoons back in fourth but kill points and giving cover when I shoot through my units kind of ruined that idea.
It's a good way to get 23 men with 10 heavy weapons for a reasonable amount of points. You could go all mortar or heavy bolter for 210 points so they are a reasonable investment and much better than many other choices in the guard army.
Overall I would only take them now if you have an extra heavy support choice and don't plan on fielding another tank.
IG Best Gen 1st overall of 10 DE 4th overall of 6
Eldar 3rd Overall/Best General of 26--2nd Overall/Best General of 7--1st Overall/Best General of 11
The main problem with them is this: One of your cheif strengths is your tanks.
Besides, you already have one free in the list, added to your HQ choices. (You can in fact pick more heavy weapons with your compulsory command squad.)
The only reason you'd want to pick one is that you want the extra junior officer - and if you want a extra JO you may as well pack out your troops choice as:
A) They score
They get close order drill bonuses (or other doctrines with restrictions) Init 5 anyone?
C) You're dropping a tank to do so.
I've never used them. I wanted to once, and tried and tried to make a competitive list, but they're just poor. (They were even poorer when you used to take turns deploying, and put them down 1st)
So, the Heavy Weapons Platoons are a poor choice (bar some bizzare tactics)
On the 6 man teams? some are good. They have various uses, but there's two threads on this bouncing about recently, and I did a usefull breakdown about 3 months ago that i can't be finked to find (bad, lazy me)
Oh, and another niggle i have with them is that they cost more per weapon (approx 5 more than a troop choice weapon cost's, bar lascannons)
so that's 95 points on 6 men with missile launchers, or three line squads with a launcher each for 210 points.
4 wounds later and the ML team isn't looking too hot, 4 wounds in one of your ten man squads and it's not too much of a problem. your three squads score, have alot more lasguns and other options (like specials) and can target seperate things. Really, don't bother with them.

i just dont like the models so i deck out my normal intfantry instead, my 5pt sniper rifle has been way more reliable than that 25 pt lascannon that takes 2 ppl to run. + they look sweeet
What do you call a lasgun with a lazer scope?
a twin linked lasgun.... HA haha haha
I would have to agree with the consensus that they are pretty poor. I can’t think of a single list I have designed that doesn’t include at least two Leman Russ’ they are ultimately far more versatile and survivable than a HW platoon, and with having the option of attaching HW squads to your HQ or infantry squads, why bother when you can have the best of both worlds, tanks and HW.
GW would need to jazz up the HW platoon to make it a more viable choice in 5th edition, it’s beyond me what exactly they can do to make you even look at it seriously…..
I have used heavy weapons platoons with the light infantry doctrine in order to deploy them to the best possible effect. This has worked well with the combination of a basie or two in order to provide unparalleled heavy weapons support. When I ran this army I was intentionally trying to invalidate any anti-tank fire support that my opponent invariably took.
The combination of Heavy Weapons Platoons, Light Infantry and Sharpshooters made quite an impression on me. I liked the option but often prefer spending the points on my Russies. In 5th edition, with the way vehicles hold up, it seems almost foolish not to take at least a couple of Russies onto the field of battle.
What do you call a lasgun with a laser sight?
I really do not see the reason for HW Platoons. You can take 5 HW squads in your HQ and save a doctrine (and room for tanks, which are very nice in 5th).
Honestly, 3 HW Squads + Command squad all with Autocannons. That is 10 autocannons and 23men, runs 340 points. You could take a LRBT (triple hb) and a LRD (with lasplas) for that price. Ask yourself, what will give you more firepower, survivability and mobility? My money is on the tanks.
However, for the HW squads you do take (in your HQ), LI (and SS, but mainly LI) is a great choice. If only for the ability to setup last (get good shots and good cover). My Lascannon squads always enjoy positioning for first turn side armor strikes
PS. Oh on a side note, how many Lootas (Basically Ork Autocannons, BS2 HeavyD3) can you get for 340 points?
That is f'ed up.
I kinda like Heavy Weapons Platoons. You can fit a lot of fire power into just a couple of guys. Used properly these are a great way to protect a flank and establish a fire line. Although as I've played against guard a lot they have their weaknesses which i've exploited a lot. Mobility. A good mobile opponent can make that massive gun emplacement into a useless point sink. They are very vulnerbale to assault, deep striking, and must remain stationary to have any effectiveness in shooting and to keep a save against most armies. On the other hand you can have a lot of them, sometimes 3 heavy weapons for the price of one tank with similar armaments. And depending on your army you can have better cover saves, infiltrating, etc, that is until the new codex. I'll judge them differently come the new codex but until then they have their uses. I do however use two russes in my list, but also a heavy weapons platoon sometimes. Still playing around with them.

While I AM a tread head, I would love to be more of a wheel head. If I could throw my heavy squads into wheeled versions of Chimeras or better yet, 2.5 ton trucks I would do it in a heartbeat.
I so very much wish I could field a Long Range Desert Patrol in the IG.
