Hey everyone, I was just wondering if this was a terrible idea. I have been looking to expand my forces and was looking into getting possibly the Catachan battleforce. I currently field all Cadian models and was wondering if it would look bad (aesthetically of course) to field these troops together. Probably in different platoons but not sure yet. Anyways, would this make for a decent looking army or would it look terrible to have large groups of the two types of models on the field together? thanks very much!
hey i know how you feel right now, i currently field a Cadian 8th army with the colour scheme and all, right down to how it looks. Apparently i would like to put some Catchan forces to make it look a little interesting. In my own thought i'd make my Catchan models to represent my veteren units and all, or even some of my officers. Just my two cents.
"DID WE JUST SIGN UP FOR A SUICIDE MISSION, RICO?" "YEAH WE JUST DID, WHEN WE ENLISTED" LOVE THE IMPERIAL GUARD, JOIN TODAY!!
Think Vietnam movie soldiers.. some guys have full kit, some have been in country so long they've adopted a more practical, casual BDU. Keep your colors the came, make your Catachans a little more rugged, and you should have a pretty good looking army.
Mixing models usually look quite good, you can either use the same colour scheme and use them asa different platoon, or use them as Light Infantry or something, and call them a detachment from another unit.
I remember seeing a guard army where every squad used different models, but the same colour scheme. That looked a little weird, lol...

I think mixing forces can add to the character of your army, especially if you have some fluff to back it up.
For example, perhaps your regiment of the Cadian 8th is on a tour, and have had some jungle/urban warfare specialists attached to impart some of their hard-fought knowledge to the regiment at large. I really like 034TH's suggestion, too. It's true, from the Roman army to those of the current age, that soldiers of any flavor will generally ditch the equipment that doesn't work for them or hinders their ability to perform their duty and survive the clash of battle. I'd say keep it on a unit by unit basis (Infantry Squads of Cadians, and of Catachans) and keep a common color scheme to bind the forces together. The other thing that came to mind was to use some really keen looking Catachans as Sargents in some of the line squads and, maybe, "counts as" Commissars or some such in the Command Squads in addition to the addition of some full units of Catachans. Give that nice little injection of Catachan flavor while still retaining the Cadian 8th look.
There's currently no way to make your army support both Cadian and Catachan doctrines that I know of (unless you go with multiple force org charts), but I'm sure if you play with some agreeable people, they might allow it for the sake of a good challenge or story in a campaign.
Yeah I wouldn't necessarily use unconverted catachans in my cadian outfit, mostly because the only catachan models I think are really cool are thier snipers, but I would definitely consider converting cadian models with a lot of catachan parts to make as Hardened Vets.
I think you need to spend more time on your floor.

Ahh see i'm not looking to mix the parts but was thinking maybe having two or more platoons that come from different armies that had to be combined due to low numbers as my fluff...
In one of the older books they explain that remnants from nearly-eradicated regiments would be tacked onto other under-sized regiments. Heck, old White Dwarf batreps would have one squad each of Mordians, Catachans, Tallarn and Cadians.
It all depends on what you think looks aesthetic. If you don't want to mix kits, then you have two choices:
- Paint the uniforms the same as your cadians, and use them as vets.
- Paint them however you want and make the army a joint ops force.
Either way BASE THEM ALL THE SAME. Good basing really pulls an army together.

I've been addicted to World of Tanks lately and neglecting my IG... But it is so... much... fun!
I have two platoons of OOP Cadians and one platoon of OOP Mordians. I don't have any problems mixing. They're all based the same and equipped the same. As long as you don't go trying to say that one is vets when it clearly looks the same as another, you shouldn't have any problems.
They look great as Hardened vets. Dropping them out of a chimera guns blazing really makes them look BA. Open shirts and ripped torsos or not, they all die the same.
