I've had a grandiose plan of creating a pure Deathwing army for some time now. I still seriously love this idea, but was thinking something a tad bit more tactical/competitive would be fun as well. I know the advent of the new Space Marine codex has shaken things up a bit, but I'm curious how effective and fun a Doublewing army is? In a recent the most recent White Dwarf there was a pretty neat battle report between Doublewing and the new Orks. Granted the Doublewing had one squad of Tactical troops (I'd prefer not to do this).
Am I better of sticking to my pure Deathwing army? If I do go the Doublewing route I'm thinking of starting off around 1500pts w/ Sammy, Belial, about 12 bikes, 10 Deathwing Terminators, and a few landspeeders if I can fit them.
Thoughts? I've never played marines so I'm at a loss here.
I love my DA. So far I've only used pure Deathwing lists but I'm slowly moving to include a few bikes just to help with deepstrike, and cause I think they will just be more useful in general. I would actually pick either Ravenwing or Deathwing to start as trying to field both Sammael and Belial in the same 1500 point list only leaves you with like 1150 points on troops.
it is really useful to take sammael and belial in one list as it makes almost every unit able to hold an objective as theyre troops.
belial lightning claws 175
total hq: 420.
3 ravenwing bikers 305
multimelta attack bike
3 extra bikes
put banner and apothecary here
3 ravenwing bikers 285
heavy bolter attack bike
3 extra bikes
5 deathwing terminators 245
1 x thunder hammer
3 x lighning claws
(attach belial here)
5 deathwing terminators 245
put banner and apothercary here
its a small list, but you get a lot of flexibility:
you dont have to deploy anything if you dont want as they can all outflank or deepstrike
you have 2 apothercarys (in the shooting squads as they use old apoth rules and are beter unengaged)
you can deploy using combat squads in objective games, making 6 bike units but in annihilation games you can stick them into just 2 units.
these points are rough because i did it in my head in work.
belial takes claws to keep his ini, just 1 TH in the combat squad as the AC has a PF anyway.
scout move to deathwing assault can be very harsh on gunline armies.
Doublewing is the only competitive build in the DA book, anything else can be done by codex marines for cheaper.

I most heartily agree that taking Belial and Sammael is a great thing getting your terminators and bikes as troops and thusly scoring is truly an amazing thing. Plus if you buy an attack bike as an attachment to a bike squad it becomes scoring as well.
I can post Dark Angels list if there is sufficient desire it has certainly opened up peoples eyes in my area to how dangerous teh DA can still be even with a subpar codex.
I'd be seriously interested in seeing more lists! I'm a nid player who has always wanted a Deathwing type army for years now. I keep going back between a Doublewing or a pure Deathwing. I like the idea of lots of bikes and a lot of LRs/Terminators.
Of course I'd like to be competitive, but mostly want to have fun and tie in some fluff. I kind of like a smaller elite force idea. Less to manage coming from my nids hehe.
if you prefer more terminators..
the effectivness of a deathwing assault is to take and odd number so you can round up
i.e 3 squds means 2 can DW assault.. but as is the problem with all DW, its too small a list and not really competetively reliable.
the list i wrote earlier gives you:
5 kill points max (6 means your wiped out and lose automatically)
capture and control/seize ground:
8 troops choices and 2 hq
Not sure if this has been dealt with in an earlier thread, but with respect to Ravenwing Assault Squads and scoring...I most heartily agree that taking Belial and Sammael is a great thing getting your terminators and bikes as troops and thusly scoring is truly an amazing thing. Plus if you buy an attack bike as an attachment to a bike squad it becomes scoring as well.
In the rule book, it clearly states that vehicles are not scoring. In CODEX: DA, it clearly states that for RAS, the attack bike and land speeder, while bought and deployed at the same time as the bikes, are each treated as separate SCORING units. How do you handle this situation? I have usually played that the Codex trumps the rule book for any rules discrepancies, but I have not played any games with this loadout in 5th yet.

attack bikes are not vehicles so theyre fine.
land speeders are 50/50 as codex over-rules bsb in most occasions, and they are bought as part of a troops choice.
