I am prepping for a small tournament (750pts) that runs one HQ and one troop, then take whatever. I wanted to make a fast assaulty army with jump marines led by a jump pack chaplain. Looking over the codex though, trying to get the most bang for the buck, it seems the captain is better hands down. Better WS, BS, attacks, wounds, and initiative. The captain has more options. The only thing the chap catches a break on is the jump pack and the crozius (free power weapon)
What do you think? Is the captain better or does the chaplain have some unseen talents that makes him worth his points?
I would say a Captain is more reliable because of his available weapons and wargear (for instance, an Aux grenade launcher can do more damage than a bolter/stormbolter to a significantly more numerous enemy without risking locking yourself in close combat, and the 2+ save from an Artificier Armour is always sweet) but then again his points cost is always just that much higher than the Chaplain's.
I guess the way I would settle this is to count the points cost of the whole army without HQ choices and see if any of the HQ choices make your points go higher than the set mark, and then disregard that HQ.
I can see that the captain has way more options and versatility. I was just wondering why the cost for both starts at 100pts. Am I missing something with the chaplain? The base captain looks much better for the same amount of points. Why would I take a chaplain except that it looks cool or fluff?
If you are going to rely on a Assaulty army I would say go with the Chaplain. Yah, your talking about how he gets the free power weapon, but his benefit is that he makes that unit fearless and they re-roll failed to hit in the round they charge.
While the Captain may have a better arrangement of weaponry, and such, he is not going to be as usefull to your army then the Chaplain, IMO.

Neither, as a general rule I would run a special character that compliments your force. In your case, someone like Shrike. Special characters generally boast better stats or weapons than vanilla characters and feature army-boosting abilities.
However, if all your looking for is a beefy character, the chappy boosts a squad and gets decent free weapons, but don't expect much and he's getting at most 4 attacks, has few wounds and a lot less equipment. The Captain is better individually, but does little for the army as a whole. On the other hand, since the chappy is only boosting 1 squad anyways and the Captain kills more models for that squad, it's kind of a toss up.
Blais's Paint Studio-Getting broken armies good soft scores since 2009
Agreed. Shrike(counts as) would be a perfect fit for what I want, but the tourney is only 750pts and dropping 195 on one model seems a bit excessive. On the other hand, it would be fun to see the look on the guys face when I infiltrate the assault squad and rip into him round one.
The rest of the small army was going like this:
Scout squad w/beacon
Assault terminators w/lightning claws
Sit back with the Tac squad, infiltrate the scouts. Scouts assault and tie up in CC, call in termies. Assault marines flank and hit the other side. Just wanted to cause mayhem quickly.
I'm still going to run with a chaplain in 1k or less lists as I always have. I ran a Reclusiarch with a jump pack in the old codex anyhow, so in the new one it actually costs me more =/ It's still a solid choice, dishing out 5 attacks on the charge with rerolls, standard power weapon, a 4+ invulnerable save, a very cheap jump pack, and the Intiative 4 is still better than a lot of armies that the enemy can muster. It's very efficient at tieing up enemy lines, can perform outflanking maneuvers, and very easily put a dent into any weak troops that they are sure to bring at a game of such low points. And being fearless doesn't hurt things either =D

Yeah i agree with what dome others have said. Captain is a better individual character, but the chaplin is weaked in CC but does more for the squad he is with.
In 750pts i think 190pts or so is to much for one guy, one lascannon and you in trouble straight away.
So back to the Captin vs chaplin thing, its realy down to personal choise. They both have the bennifits. Although the captain tends to be more expensive points wise.

Depends on you fluff :p Captains usually join any task group that sees battle, where as Chaplains may lead a defence or diversion etc.
Chaplain in my opinion does seem the more obvious choice, with Fearless and Litanies of Battle etc.
But, if you had the Captain, what Weaps would you give him? would you gear him up for anything adn everything? or just keep him Power weap and jump pack? (in which case go for the Chap)
Whats stopping you going for both Chap and Captain? if you would consider Shrike at 195 points, then why not both a captain and chaplain at around 250pts? (assuming a basic wargear selection)
not the best choice for a 750pts list i guess buy yea >_> ;p

1 on 1, Captains are superior. Chaplains support their unit better though, thanks to Liturgies of Battle and Fearless. The whole squad re-rolling hits is huge, so the Chaplain takes a dive in individual power to help his buddies out. Plus, a simply Chap with a jump pack is really cheap for what he offers.
