Brand new IG player here - I'm still tooling up my first 1000 points. My only serious question so far, that I haven't been able to find an answer to via lurking, is regarding side sponsor weapons. Namely, are the heavy bolters on the leman russ (and the heavy plasma cannons on the demolisher varient) worth it? I searched and couldn't find a similiar thread.
It seems to me on the normal Russ that its kind of a toss up. My biggest concern in my casual group is a Blood Angels player who, in our first round of skirmishes (750 points) will be running with 2 assault squads (one death company) and some CC termies (thunder hammers). Normally, I'd just pretend that the Russ is a peice of armored artillery, but with all the CC that's going to be going on, I'm concerened about throwing templates out willy-nilly. If I take a heavy stubber and HK missile, will I be able to find a turn to sit still and fire them all? Is it just a waste of 32 points? Should I cut them off and change my hull mounted Las Cannon to a Heavy Bolter (as it will never be fired)?
With the demolisher varient, that I'll probably be buying shortly, the plasma cannons seem more worth it given their extended range vs the demolisher. I'd run them with probably a Las Cannon (I keep reading that one should optimize the same sorts of weapons in one squad/vehicle). The only concerne I can see is that you can't move the demolisher around if you fire the plasma cannons... Am I misreading the situation here?
Any comentary on the suckyness/awesomeness of side sponsors would be appreciated and any anecdotes, especially vs CC heavy armies, would be wicked appreciated. Thanks in advance =)
Additionally, I realize that in 750 points IG just wont be able to seriously compete with MEQs.
I think there was a poll on this a while back, but regardless.
I personally after playing a few games of fifth and reading the rule for defensive weapons made a snap decision after one of the games, I picked up all six of my standard leman russ tanks, put the sponson on the side of the table and smacked my palm on the turret, hard. Thus breaking of the sponson, repeat and rinse until all sponsons are off.
My reason is simple, a stationary tank in range of an assault = dead.
A stationary tank may or may not get good LOS to enemy units.
A leman russ battletank should (and usually does) fire it battle cannon (thus no other weapons may fire)
I would rather throw out a powerfull pie plate (scatter or no) than 9 hb shots.
IF the main cannon is destroyed, you still have the lascannon or the heavy bolter in the hull.
Personally I kept my lascannons since then you can still hunt tanks with it.
the only advantage to sponsons is to enable it to survive the "death by weapon destroyed + immobilised" fate a little longer.
The plasma sponsons on the demolisher however I will take (when I finish building it) since that will give me one or two shots while I am closing to the shorter range of the demolisher main cannon.
But to sum it up
Sponsons on tanks (except demolisher) = no go
Keep in mind, this is all just my personal opinion
I always run with sponsons.
On a standard Russ, the hull weapon should always be the HB. I take the the HB sponsons as well, because there are always situations where an enemy target is just too close to a friendly unit to risk a scatter of the template.
And for the points cost, its an absolute steel for the option. At 1% of a 1500pt army, they are just too cheap to leave without them.
For the Demolisher, I reluctantly pay the points for plasma cannons with hull lascannon.
However, if I had to save some points, it would be an easy choice to lose the sponsons and down grade the hull weapon to a HB.
It's worth a krak!
They only time in fifth edition where I've actually fired the sponsons was when a single chaos lord was heading toward my lines. 9 heavy bolter shots have a better chance of a kill against a multi-ound target with an invulnerable save than a single battlecannon shot.
That being said, if I run a Russ, I usually run Three. That is 30 points I often end up spending on something else.
RecklessFable's Journey to Mediocrity (Painting an IG army)
I've been addicted to World of Tanks lately and neglecting my IG... But it is so... much... fun!
I like them, 3 Hb's on a russ a lascannon and plasma cannons on a demolisher. Just attach them in a non-perminant way, rare earth magnets or blue tac should work. That way you can choose to use the sponsons or not without having to break them off like a certain valthonis. Do this with the other options like pintle mouns, HKM, dozer blade...
I however would choose to go with the sponson weapons just in case of a small spread out unit, single character, or enemy too close to my troops to worth a scattering pie plate.
Sponson weapons are a very opinionated topic, blue tac your sponson weapons, and try some games with and without them. See which setup you like more.
IG Best Gen 1st overall of 10 DE 4th overall of 6
Eldar 3rd Overall/Best General of 26--2nd Overall/Best General of 7--1st Overall/Best General of 11
Well, these days I tend to play on large boards against cowardly opponents, who have the cheek to spread their units out as much as they can to avoid my pie-plates! I know - there's no justice...
But when you have spread out enemy, sometimes 9 HB shots can work out better than the battle cannon on a LR. I find them particularly useful against the Eldar - who have an annoying habit of only giving you a clear shot when they're too near your lines to make firing a pie-plate a good idea - you'd be surprised by how nicely those HB's can chew them up!
Demolishers, on the other hand, are a different story, as they have a different role to the MBT. I personally have my demolishers creep forward with my infantry, providing close support and chucking pie-plates at things massed las guns just wont kill. This obviously means that the sponsons get used alot less often, when attacking. When defending, however, it is exeptionally handy to be able to fire 2 small blasts that are very powerful and low AP - especially against MEQ's.
So in summary, I reccomend sponsons all round - 3 HB's on your LRMBT's and 2 plasma cannons and a las cannon on your LRD's.
In 4ed they were manditory, but in 5th I play only a Lascannon on my Russes in case I get a weapon destroyed.

I love the sponsons i usually use Heavy Bolters as if infantry gets to close to my tank.
We who have seen war will never stop seeing it....In the silence of the night, we will always hear the screams....
Sponsons for me thanks, if the Main battle cannon dies then it is a big waste otherwise.
I use heavy flamers as side sponsons to counter flankers and deepstrikers. After using the heavy flamers my opponent in their turn always attack the tank giving my infantry another turn to shoot at them with plasma guns or heavy weapons.
