Are they worth it? Because for 25 more pts than a Captain I get an orbital bombardment which can auto kill almost anything. What do you think?
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day,Give a man religion and he'll starve to death praying for a fish
Why not just use Kantor, and get the OB for free, and Kantor costs 175pts. Also, You are allowed to use the model, wargear and stats and give it a new name as per the new Codex.
About usefullness of the OB. Tried it once, misswed completley, never used it again. I'd rather shoot with my Dorn's Arrow next time. Also, an OB sucks up one movement phase. T_T
Kantor has the bonus of opening up more scoring units too... never something to underestimate especially considering how important Sternguard have become.
*rubs human beard*
I agree that 25pts is a bit much for the OB, so I will only ever take a CM iff I'm planning to take a honour guard as well.
And in all the hype of the super cool SM Special Characters, is there anybody else that is not quite so eager to just throw away the SM Combat Tactics?
I have a hard time giving up the vanilla chapter tactics. Has saved my bacon on many occasions so far. Honor guards really don't seem that interesting considering Assault Termies are better just about every way. I generally find chapter masters a little meh. Pedro is a cool character to play with once in a while though due to the Sternguard synergy.
I've yet to use the special Characters.
I use the Shrike model as a 'vanilla' captain in most games.
I used him at Chapter Master level once and his Orbital Strike did some damage, his 12" movement and the fact it can be fired without need of LoS meant it was a good first turn attack that did very little to slow my advance.
I am tempted to use Lysander as many are those who sing his praises and I love the model (he was purchased, assembled and painted a Doom Eagle alongside Shrike)
But then again, in over a decade of wargaming I've used special characters about 10 times I'd say.. I prefer my own character to lead my men
Arch Overfiend & Grand Despot
I currently play:
Doom Eagle Space Marines
Hive Fleet Omega Tyranids
Goff Ork Boyz(dead)
Tau of O'me
Inquisitorial Xeno Hunters
and my attempted foray into fantasy
'Dark Angel Green' Dark Elves in need of fluff
Agreed. But then again, in over a decade of wargaming I've used special characters about 10 times I'd say.. I prefer my own character to lead my men
The hobby is all about creativity. It's a shame they don't give you methods to create your own special character, but then again that's very hard to maintain a balance.
I think the last chaos codex came pretty close, but that, of course, was open to some serious abuse too.
Apart fromt that character choice is all swings and roundabouts really. It depends what you like your HQ to do and how he fits in with your army.
Solely on the matter of '25 points for Orbital Bombardement', those 25 points made a big bad Ork Psyker go away my first shooting phase last time I fielded my Master. And a couple of Boyz with him.
Good old "Hit" side of the Scatter dice, mmm.
The OB isn't that bad at taking down vehicles if it hits them, either. It's better than railguns because it has the same strength and ap of the Tau Railguns, but it's ordinance as well so you have a better pen. chance.
Granted, I've been screwed twice by it on the vehicle damage chart against Leman Russes by rolling a 3, then adding 1.
But then I roll the TH/SS Termis up in their Land Raider to rip that thing a new biological excreting orifice.
Grey2321, LO is a family-oriented site. Profanity is not allowed, so I've changed your post to reflect more 'appropriate' vernacular.
