Hi guys, I'm looking at getting back into 40k, and I'm dusting off my Salamanders army, and looking for some feedback. Under the old rules (3rd Ed. I think, the one with Black Templars on the cover), I had about 1000 points. Here is my what I have right now.
Chaplain with thunder hammer (Xavier I think), he came out around the Battle of Armageddon a few years back.
Librarian in Terminator armour
5 Terminators, including 2 heavy flamers
5 Scouts (chainswords and bolt pistols)
26 space marines including 3 sergants, 2 flamers, and one missile launcher. I had these guys in 1 squad of 10, and 2 squads of 8
1 Dread awaiting assembly
Everything except the dread is painted and ready to go. Now, here is my plan on how to get everything up to date.
AoBR box set
Space Marines Codex
Maybe one more unit, depending on funds
From what I've heard/read is that AoBR includes a rulebook (rules minus the fluff, from what the guy at the local GW store told me). Will I be getting the full rule set? Also, another local game store is hosting bring and battles for 1800 point armies. Can I reach that with my stuff and the AoBR set? If not, what sort of point battles will I be able to participate in with the proposed army?
Also, I'd love to hear some input on what might be good additions for my army, since I will be getting the codex soon, but some stuff has to happen first.
For the Emperor!
Looks like you have enough shooty elements. The Black Reach set will add even more shooty units at a great value. Why not pick up an assault based unit to backup your shooty ones?
I personally have at least one assault squad or some vanguards just behind the front line in case the enemy gets too close. CC is pretty brutal, good to have something to respond with.
Sounds good. I was thinking of an assault squad. I'd like to get some tanks, but I don't think I'll be able to afford that money-wise.
Yah the AoBR box includes the full set of rules, to the same number of pages as the big rule book, its just you don't get any of the Hobby/Fluff information in the back, its just rules. AoBR is a great set tho, 10 Marines, 5 Terminators, 1 Dread, 1 Captain. You can't go wrong grabbing one of those. With the new dex, you'll find there are some very Salamander'y units, such as Land Raider Redeemers with two flamestorm cannons, really effective and fluffy. Assault marines aren't a bad choice, but I would suggest acouple Land Speeders or Attack Bikes with MM's. The Land Speeders are probably the better buy, because you can magnetize them to be any variation you want (1 kit for the 3 variation speeders, another good buy). Find a way to pick you 4 more marines too, to round up those squads(if they don't number 10, you don't get weapon options besides sergeant)

You've got a good set up there, should be fine with Black Reach.
That will give you 1 Captain, 5 basic Termies (since it's 1 heavy weapon per 5 Terminators you're set for heavy weapons), a Dread, and 10 Marines.
You could easily do something like this
Libby in Termie armor (epistolary, Storm Shield, Gate of Infinity, Vortex or Avenger)
10 Termies w/ 2 heavy flamers
2x Dreads w/ Multi-melt and Heavy Flamer in Drop Pods
3 Tactical Squads with missile, flamer, powerfists
1 Dev Squad (use your leftover marines and pick up a Dev Squad box)
Add a 3rd Drop Pod to drop in empty so your Dreads can come in together (or put a Tac Squad in there to keep a scoring unit safe). That should be around 1800 points and all you need to buy is a box of Devastators and 3 Pods.
That gives you a solid fire base and a nice alpha strike in the form of 2 Dread Pods (give them locater beacons so your Termies arrive without incident) and the Libby+Termies. You don't have to hold the Termies in reserve, just use Gate and come in safely with the locater beacons and roast something with 2 HFs and Avenger.
I would pick up the new space marine codex first, and maybe grab a battleforce, personally AoBR is probably the way to go, but the new codex has a special character of the slamanders and hes pretty cool. or grab a box of devastators and equip them to your tactical squads [multi meltas are free!] theres just alot more stuff in the new SM codex.
"Kill a man and you are an assassin. Kill millions of men and you are a conqueror. Kill everyone and you are a god!"
Well thanks for the suggestions guys, but I think a battleforce or drop pods are out of my budget at this point. I'm hoping to have $150 CDN to get the new rules and some more figures. AoBR looks to be the best way to do this, but I am welcome to suggestions.
Edit: If I'm playing at a games store/GW store, do I need to have drop pod models to use drop pods? Or is it treated like deep strikes where there isn't any models for it?

Drop Pods are a deep striking transport, so you'll need an actual model.
I'm not sure what 150 CDN is in real money, but Black Reach and the Codex is definitely a good call. You can still get up to 1800 fairly easily.
Well if I buy from my local GW store, I'll be able to get AoBR, SM Codex, and another 10 man squad like assault marines (2 boxes), and have a bit left over for paint, and such.
Any Canadians on here that can recommend a good online games store for comparison shopping?
