I've just recently bought another battleforce box, and can't decide how to make up my heavy weapons teams.
Currently I have:
4x Heavy Bolter
3x Missile Launcher
I'm currently thinking of something like another 2-3 missile launcher teams, and 1 each of Heavy Bolter, Lascannon and Autocannon. I know I can make up to 9 teams, but each one extra is two fewer normal guardsmen...
What would you recommend, LO?
You don't have to make 9 teams. You can just make 9 weapons and stick them in front of 2 normal based guardsmen. That's how most of the metal heavy weapon teams are, they're not on the big base.
i prefer missile launchers and auto cannons for flexibility.
I personally prefer Lascannons and Heavy Bolters; but maybe that's because I'm always fighting MEQ's...

I'd do liek everyone else suggested, put them on bases and put them in front of normal guardsmen, kinda like what most of the eldar players have for their guardians. In my case i'll build heavy bolters and missle launchers, most of the time i'll be fighting a combination of horde armies (tyranids and orkz) or MEQs.
"DID WE JUST SIGN UP FOR A SUICIDE MISSION, RICO?" "YEAH WE JUST DID, WHEN WE ENLISTED" LOVE THE IMPERIAL GUARD, JOIN TODAY!!
For anti-armor, anti-Monstrous-Creatures, anti-terminator, you can't beat a lascannon, and its only 5pts more than the missile launcher or autocannon. For anti-horde (Tyranids, orks, eldars, other IG's), Heavy Bolter all the way. It does its job quite effectively and cheaply.
The missile launcher you can use in your regular infantry or officer squad. You get more bang for the buck there. I don't use mortars but I hear they're a lot of fun.
Personally I would beef up the missile launchers and the autocannons with perhaps an extra heavy bolter?
I say this simply as those two are the most versatile heavy weapons and in an allcomers list one of those types should form the bulk of your heavy weapons selection.
5 lascannon teams
12 missile teams
8 heavy bolter teams
9 autocannon teams
5 mortar teams
That is the spread of my heavy weapons atm in near 9000 points of guard. As you can see the most specialised weapons take the least space, that is the lascannon and mortar. Autocannons or in my case missile launchers occupy the top end as they are versatile and heavy bolters somewhere in the middle.
As for the that uses up two, or more, more guardsmen the simple solution is to buy more guardsmen or like me keep the heavy weapons in a pot so when you go for an expansion you dont buy any more until you need something specific.
Hope that helps
Is it generally a good idea to have the ranges of your heavy weapon squads all the same? Seems like going HB and Autocannons together would be a waste of 12"...
precisely logco. keep things homogenous
