Welcome to Librarium Online!
I've been thinking of making a recon style company with plenty of sentinels and maybe very few chimeras/hellhounds with only little heavy weapons. I've been thinking of using it with a space marine chapter as just backup. Would this be at all useful? Have any of you had an army like this?
Well, having a recon style army is entirely possible. On the other hand, I would suggest that having few heavy weapons might not be such an amazing idea. I'm not entirely sure what you mean, though - would you be using the SM's and the Guard in the same game? If so, that army will not generally be tournament legal.
Now, the army. You might want to consider the drop trooper doctrine - that'll allow you to deep strike in, negating your light armour. Sentinels will be great for outflanking in this kind of set up. It might be a good idea to load up on heavy bolters in your squads, so you can drop into cover and bring heavy firepower to bear, which you will need if you're not planning on taking tanks.
If you tell me a little more about what kind of set up your're thinking of I'll hopefully be able to help out a bit more.
Well I was thinking of a Daemonhunter army so I could use IG and SM with the "by the authority of the immortal emperor of mankind" rule. At first I thought of it being a more fluffy than practical thing in a small campaign I'm going to do, but I thought that if there's a good use for these guys, why not!
So I thought of using heavy weapons in maybe 1/3 squads or something. Maybe 2/5 would be better, but I don't want to include lascannons because of the fluff. Heavy bolters & missile launchers are ok though.
Drop trooper might be good for these guys. In combat I was thinking of using them as forward observers who go in first and then either dig in or fall back and regroup to advance again. They will definately be overshadowed by the space marines.
Well, there's a problem right there, I'm afraid. The allies rule allows you to use EITHER Imperial Guard OR Space Marines as allies to a Daemonhunter force - not both. If you want to use SM's with your Guard legally you'll have to use Grey Knights, or play apocalypse. Sorry!
The Gents of the DH forum did a great compilation of Allies rules here:
Inquisition Allies Rule Summary
as far as a Recon company, it's definately do-able. For the next few months, at least. Once the new codex comes out, you'll have to find a way other then Doctrines for making your force.
You MIGHT be able to do a force according to the allies rules, and induct IG into either your WH or DH force. I've done a WH Armored Company I liked a lot.
