On average, and assuming you're creating a tourney all-comers army (say around 1500 points), how many Heavy Weapons of each type do you normally end up taking?
Don't blame me; I'm just telling it like it is. Blame GW if you really want to blame somebody.
in my 1000 pts, 4 autocannons, normal leman russ, basilisk, hellhound
in a 1500 point list, i'd say 15 heavies (at least 12). but you can get up to the 30s if you want to
i personally like a mixed bag of heavies. 3 lascannons, 3 missles, 6 heavy bolters, 3 autocannons. is my standard for 1500. (not including the heavies on tanks)
For a balanced army it's better to take a mix of heavy weapons like BoxANT said.
I personally take a squad each of autocannons and heavy bolters. Then I take six lascannons in my six infantry squads. My two command squads usually have two autocannons in them.
Also, recently I have been taking three sentinels with lascannons and keeping them at the very rear of my lines to take potshots at important targets.
So in the end I usually have 15-17 heavy weapons total.
The most IMPORTANT thing to consider is where to point these heavy weapons. HB's are for enemy troops primarily. Autocannons should be primarily concerned with lightly armored vehicles like rhinos and speeder and sentinels. Missile launchers should primarily occupy their time picking off heavier armor such as chimera's and predators and Lascannons should shoot heavy tanks, heavily armored troops and then work their way down to light tanks.
Lastly, mortars should never find themselves in a balanced list. Use them when you are certain that you are going to be facing something with a low armor value.
In my 1850 point list I have:
2 Missile Launchers
8 Heavy bolters
I give the Lascannons to my veterans to take advantage of the vet squads' BS of 4. I make sure everyone else has the sharpshooters doctrine.

Well, with Dark Eldar you can have 30+ Dark Lances. . . . .

who the hell cares about dark lances? where did that come from?
In my 1500 pt army usually against power armor foes, i have 9.
2 missile launchers

hmm....starting to feel that for my 1500pts im gonna need a a few more hvy weapon teams <_<
hey now, my commander hasn't died at all lately..why? because he's always behind a hill or patch of woods lending his leadership to my firebase and allowing the standard bearer to work his rerollin of morale magic - catching units that are falling back with his iron discipline too. this has proven worth it's points and the fact that they have a mortar means that beyond just being helpful in the above ways, the command squad has actually killed stuff too! in this dawning era of no meatshieldage, my mortar is a *great* addition to the list of heavy weapons my army fields. i dont ever expect it to kill a thing, but when it splats 6 gaunts in one shot then turns around and splats 5 more, that's not worthless. even vs. space marines, when i kill one i'm like 'hooray!!!!!!' it's a bonus, not anything i expect...mortars suck anywhere but in your command squad that you want dedicated to leadership/morale/rallying line squads...maybe a heavy weapon squad of em if you're really crazy about them, but that's not for me.Originally posted by H0urg1ass@Jul 23 2004, 20:40
