Rumours are flying around the net in regards to the next iteration of the IG codex. These include some basic changes to the cost of special weapons etc, most notable being an increase in cost of the plasma gun (and possibly plasma pistol). So far it looks like the following points for specials/heavys:
Grenade Launcher 5pts
Plasma Gun 15pts
Heavy Bolter 5pts
Missile Launcher 10pts
So I ask, at 15 points, would you still take the plasma gun?
What Guardsmen dont want to hear...
"Ok boys, time to fix bayonets!"
Yes, I'd take it in the current capacity I do now. A few mobile squads in chimeras or dropping. The bulk of my infantry make do with grenade launchers.
yes, if the squad cost is as low as the current rumors.
I only run 2-4 plasma guns in my list anyway so I wouldn't be too disappointed with a point increase. Hell it suits the guard fluff that they are rare and treasured weapons so I endorce the idea. Besiade we'll be saving so many points everywhere else it's barely a loss.
IG Best Gen 1st overall of 10 DE 4th overall of 6
Eldar 3rd Overall/Best General of 26--2nd Overall/Best General of 7--1st Overall/Best General of 11
plasma? well, yes. I usually have them in command squads. But I need to stop that, because my command squads never get to the front
But if the points you post are correct, I fear that a new wave of gunline IG will be around the corner.
Rumors say 4 pts per guardsman.
Rumors say 5 pts per heavy bolter
Rumors say as many as 2 heavy weapons in a line squad (I think).
So a 10 man squad, with two heavy bolters = 50 pts...
But on topic. plasma, at 15 pts?, mmmh, its not a large point increase. And my army should be more mobile, BUT, I think I'd go with meltaguns. Better against tanks, and its an assault weapon.
The rumors are as many as 2 special weapons, not heavy. Still a max of 1 heavy and 1 special, just letting you take an extra special instead of the heavy.
Oh... curses (sweeping shattered dream into trashbin)
But still, that would leave a 10 man heavybolter squad at a measly 45 pts. versus the 70 it is currently. Thats almost a 2for1 deal :p
But to go mobile, I'm not sure if id go 2Xmelta, or 2Xgrenade. hmmm
I think I'd avoid plasma in line squads, simply because, they are going to be moving, and 15 points would be an annoying loss to the odd "gets hot". And the one extra shot is not worth the 5 extra points it is over the meltagun. And the melta can sweep the floor with enemy walkers and tanks (curses killakans and dreads!).
I might even go pure lasgun, at 40 points for 10 wounds and 20 shots at rapid fire range? yes please.
I am however worried about how troop choices will be made up in the new codex. Can I still take 5X10 men (+- command) per troop choice? I hope so..
For a very tactically inept army : 300 guardsmen at 1200 . That actually leaves room for some other goodies. perhaps a tank or two?
Well, the new marine GL is rapid fire instead of assault 24. So it may lose its mobility.
It seems to balance out. More expensive plasmas but other guns cheaper. Currently, I like to run grenadiers with 1 plasma + 1 melta or 2 plasmas if I'm playing MEQ's, but I have no qualms about taking other weapons if they're cheaper.
On a side note, I haven't played my guards in a while. Mainly daemonhunters now, either pure or allied with marines or guards. Can't wait for the new IG codex to come out. Gonna start using my guards again then.
those point costs seems fairer, means my squads who use grenade launchers anyway are just that much cheaper
