im stuck on what unit size to use for my blood angels army many people seem to say five men is enough this is my current configuration for my single assault squad
sergeant with combat shield, melta bombs and combat shield
2 plasma pistols
when i have enough money i am going to add a further 500 pts. this means expanding the amount of assault marines in the army should i field them as a second 5 man squad or increase the size of the current squad. i am not very experienced with marines please help me.
Personally I a huge fan of the 7 man squad (edit: as Parcival pointed out, illegal for Blood Angels) with 2 plasma pistols, vet serge with power fist, combat shield and melta bomb squad. I almost always use them with a jump pack captain (forgotten the current name for the 2wounder) armed with storm shield power weapon and combi melta.

Blood Angels Assault Squads fulfill two purposes:
The best combination is a 10 man squad, everyone with bolt pistol and chainsword except for the sergeant who's carrying a Powerfist and a bolt pistol.
- Taking (far) mission objectives.
- Powerfist delivery.
Five man squads are okay for a Vanilla player who wants to use Assault Squads to harass the enemy, but you definitely want 10 for the added stamina. You want the enemy to have to kill as many Marines as possible until he can get to your sergeant with the Powerfist.
I also glued two plasma pistols to the models in my squads, but today I would give them normal bolt pistols as well. The plasma pistols are nice as they sometimes kill one or two Chaos Marines before I smash into them and thus decrease the numbers of attacks coming back at me, but the plasma pistols are very pricey pointswise and there is the occasional misfire, of course. Therefore, I recommend to use bolt pistols only and invest those points somewhere else. If I didn't have those 4 plasma pistols in my two Assault squads, I could buy a Land Speeder or Attack Bike instead. Go figure.

10-man assault w/P-fist sergeant is the way to go. However, I always take 2 plasma pistols (sometimes even 3 if I have enough points). I then sic them onto tough enemy units. With them, you can wipe out a 5-man squad of terminators or even a Monstrous Creature. To be successful with them, you have to maximize your shooting before assaulting.
The 15pt pistol has a good chance to take out a 40pt termie. I'd say it's worth it.
Also, with a 10-man squad, if you really need to, you can always split them up via combat squads.

I am a big fan of 10-man squads, across the board. I tend to give my Assault Marines a Power Fist and one or two Flamers for some extra bite. I don't think there's necessarily a "best" configuration, for any unit, but I definitely prefer the maxed out squad with the goodies.
I may be the only one, but I run mine 10 strong, with 2 Flamers and a Powerfist, in a Drop Pod along with one of my Captains. Works out great whether of not they get charged the turn after they land, as they can hold their own in CC.
True, but it is free with the squad, and I don't have a model with a Jump Pack for my Captain, and it gives me and odd number of Pods for the Drop Pod Assault rule, so there is a reason for the madness!
flamers, flamers, flamers.
i'd say storm shield for the sgt, simply because there's no advantage to bolt pistols with powerfists anymore. give your boys two flamers and krak grenades for tank hunting. s6 on rear armor makes a nicely sized dent.
run two-three of them for maximum effect especially for blood angels...
