I'm thinking of taking 2 thunderfire cannons in a 2000 point army. For 200 points they seem like a bargain. Few questions:
If this daft? Will they just give 2 easy kill points?
What's the best way to protect them? or do you bother?
Can I give my cloaked sniper scouts a 2+ save by bolstering their cover?
I'm thinking they'll be good vs orks and nids, and useful for covering tac squads on objectives in my deployment zone.
Naturally, if the enemy is hitting your rear or flank, you're doing something wrong...
I advise you give it a try and let us all know how it performs =)
I use one regularly and i am never disappointed. Last week i played dark eldar, the thunderfire cannon won me the game. It killed over 60 warriors and 20 witches over the course of 6 turns.
Warning this user is totally insane...
Consider that for 200 points you can get a Vindicator and a Whirlwind. Yes, the TFC shoots a lot better than a Whirly but it can't match it for survivability. Nor can all those Blasts compare to a Demolisher Cannon.
TFCs are mostly static.
On the plus side you do get Techmarines on the cheap.
If anything I'd go with a Vindicator and one TFC, the TFC for Horde-duties while the Vindy punches the tougher guys in the neck.
Question, why does everyone say to use Bolster on cover? I thought it only worked on ruins...
Space Marines: W15/L7/D3
Imperial Guard: W6/L4/D0
It does only work on ruins, which can shaft you a little bit depending on your table. But seeing with the release of the Cities of Death terrain and the general "industrial-ness" of 40k, it should be too hard to get some ruins for your games. But no, you can't bolster some tress or a crater, as funny as it is to imagine a Techmarine digging it a bit deeper.
Good point on the ruins...
think I'll go with 1 thunderfire and 1 vindicator
I prefer the thunderfire over the whirlwind as there's less chance of 4 blasts missing than 1 barrage, plus the range is better and the bolster defenses will complement my scouts.
Perhaps I should get Chronus into the vindicator...
For the love of the Emperor NO. I personally dont like Chronus in any veichle to many points but in a vindicator no no no its a scatter weapon thats all i have to say about it
Anyways i do think the 2 tfc could work need to defend them a bit and there a bit fragile correct me if im wrong but i believe that artillary pieces are armour 10 and die to a single glancing or penertrating (sorry if that breaks a no stats rule) so there easy enough to kill
also on the subject of bolster random bits of terrain how about long grass........ would the techy encase the grass in steel?
maybe he puts up a sign saying no space marines here
